I would say in the range of how his SOTU could have gone, Biden probably performed adequately on that meager measure of comparing his perfomrance to his cone of possible outcomes. It could have been far worse, that much is for sure. While his affect was disconnected and his rantings not helpful in getting people in the middle to vote for him, he did not go full on confused old man and he was able to adequately read the teleprompter without too many gaffs.

From where I sit, this is EXACTLY what I would want to see. If it had gone as bad as it could have, Biden would 100% be removed from being the nominee. He did well enough to hopefully stay on the ballot. This is a great thing. There is no way the American Public is going to give him the job for the next 5 years. I have always operated under the assumption that Biden will be replaced. The excitement from the left about this adequate but politically tenuous SOTU, now gives me hope that he remains.

The ability to run a country has nothing to do with the ability to deliver a speech without a teleprompter. I recall one murderous dictator who was excellent at delivering speeches without teleprompters, but he led his country into ruin. Politicians have been reading from speeches either teleprompter or on paper since speeches were first delivered.
