Brexit has completely failed for UK, say clear majority of Britons . “We can’t afford to have people doing nothing in an election year,” a party spokesperson had told local news outlet the York Press. Reform UK admitted it didn’t realize that Tommy Cawkwell, its election candidate in York Central, had perished when he was sacked for lack of activity. Cawkwell had actually died two months before. Reform’s selection process has been hit by a series of gaffes. One candidate, in Aberdeenshire, was ditched after they made pro-cannibalism comments and suggested the former U.K. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace “should be left to die” in Afghanistan, while several others have been dropped for making offensive comments on social media. The party are, for now, standing by other candidates whose outlandish views have been revealed by the press — including one who said criminals should have “their organs harvested.” https://www.politico.eu/article/nigel-farage-party-fired-candidate-inactive-turns-out-dead-uk/ Presumably, Nigel's Party is now checking for signs of life in its remaining slate of candidates.
Most people are clueless idiots who don't even know what Brexit is. Fact. The reality that regaining political independence is a good idea remains true today as it has ever been. What the UK needs is more free trade deals, especially with North America, and to slash useless regulations especially on the oil and gas sectors.
Ah, but a dead candidate whose party is unaware whether their candidates are alive or dead! Brits recognize that resurrecting trade barriers has proved to be an economic disaster, ideological claptrap aside. Brexit has completely failed for UK, say clear majority of Britons
Yawn. When you have to lie then you've lost. Brexit was about political independence and not about "resurrecting trade barriers". The EU decided to do that and Democrats in the US have been acting like the EU's running dog lackey blocking a free trade agreement. All will be better in time and, as usual, remoaners are just falsely trying to blame political independence for every unrelated problem under the sun. It is dishonest but remoaners have always been dishonest liars.
I was a Remainer although I do understand why people (including my father) did vote for Brexit. Really it hasn't changed that much, still to early to see if it is a success or failure.
It was mainly older Brits that voted for it. Younger ones are stuck with it. It's too late to undo it. Brexit and the economy: the hit has been ‘substantially negative’ ‘Bregret’? Many Brits are suffering from Brexit regret
Brexit was inevitable. The whole idea of a homogeneous Europe has never been a part of British ideology. We have more in common spiritually with, Japan for example, than we ever have or had with, Sweden for example. We were never asked to be conquered by France or Denmark and as for the Danes, it was a wholly negative invasion from our perspective. We should welcome free trade with South Africa or Japan.
As polls confirm, most Brits regret Brexit, especially younger one with a more cosmopolitan outlook. Re-erecting trade barriers was a dumb idea. Brexit opinion poll by age 2024 | Statista As of February 2024, a significant majority of young Britons thought that leaving the EU was the wrong decision, with 70 percent of 18 to 24 year-old's and 66 percent of 25 and 49 year-old's regretting the decision. By contrast, 56 percent of those aged of 65 thought that Brexit was the right decision. Brexit has completely failed for UK, say clear majority of Britons
It's reality, UK was punching above its weight purely because of colonialism. With that in mind, a shrinking of the economy was inevitable.
The UK had a 'free trade agreement' with its largest trading partner - the EU. Then it threw it away in a fit of small minded foolishness. None of the claimed benefits have occoured while many of the claimed disadvantages have. If it remains this unpopular Starmer may well consider a vote to rejoin in his second term (but not his first).
Well that's the interesting thing, Labour aren't making Brexit a policy, not least because many who voted for it were from the working classes in the former industrial heartland.
Starmer won't touch it in his first term. There doesn't seem to be much appetite to re-open that wound right now, and he is being SUPER cautious not to give the Tories anything to attack him with on pretty much any issue. My bet is that a few quiet soundings are taken during the first term both at home (to see what those Labour voters are thinking) and in the EU (to see if any decent sort of deal is on offer). If everything aligns I could see him having a shot at it somewhere about year two of a second term.....but everything would have to align. I don't get the sense it is something he is burning to do, but I can see a way it could be sold and could work for him - especially if there are economic benefits. It will also depend on what happens to the Tories - what direction do they go after the wipeout.
I cheer the Brits for brexit. The concept of turning your government over to another group is truly nutty. But politics are at play there as they are everywhere else in the democratic world.
Speculative, but the geezer-driven retreat from the EU is increasingly recognized as a serious mistake by most Brits. Britain faces £2bn post-Brexit bill on European food imports Why most people regret Brexit - The Economist
Wrong on all counts. As soon as Biden is gone there will be a free trade treaty also we will always need more oil and gas because it is the base of literally thousands of different base products which are used in virtually everything we need for modern life. That is reality.
The British never voted to join the EU, they voted to join the common market, which was simply to remove barriers to trade. The EU became the bloated juggernaut of bureaucracy much later, and that's what caused Brexit.
