Most older styles of trash (when it was first being invented) sounded (sounds to me) a lot like punk rock. VIO-lence is like what some punk sounds like today. It's either that, or like punk mixed with reggae. Thanks sublime.

 

Yes, Thrash was heavily influenced by British punk bands like Discharge, The Exploited and GBH, as well as American bands such as Dead Kennedys, Black Flag and Bad Brains.

 

Punk was itself partly a reaction to the over-the-top 'dinosour rock' of the 70's (as they saw it) - the likes of Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Genesis etc.. You can see the influence in attitude of punk (especially the rejection of instrumental virtuosity being the most important factor in the music, in some cases!) in some of the NWOBHM and associated stuff that was such a big influence on early thrash:

Compare that with the kind of punk going on at the time, and musically there isn't that much difference - the two were kind of developing together:

Motorhead in particular were always a band with a crossover punk/metal audience (touring with punk bands like The (*)(*)(*)(*)ed regularly in their early days).

They have been developing together ever since, of course, with bands like Hatebreed having a foot in each camp, so to speak:

and people like Suicidal Tendencies kind of crossing from one to the other:

But then metal has also similarly been developing alongside gothic stuff (which was an entirely separate thing when I was growing up in the 80's), rap, and all kind of other things. One of the things that has enabled metal to survive for 40 years is the fact that it so readily reinvents itself, and absorbs all these different influences from other things, to just produce more and more new 'sub-genres'. It's happened so many times, yet it's still all identifiably 'metal'.
