This story is now six weeks old.

It applies to people who applied for Canadian citizenship by falsifying papers with the assistance of corrupt immigration lawyers.

Canada to oust foreign criminals: Toews

    By Ian Robertson, QMI Agency

    Updated 11 hours ago
TORONTO - Convicted foreign killers, rapists, drug dealers and armed robbers are next on a list of the most wanted facing deportation with public help.

Lauding unprecedented success since releasing 30 suspected overseas war criminals' photos, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews on Thursday announced 32 non-Canadian criminals are now on a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) photo lineup.

Those hard-core undesirables -- who were all convicted of serious crimes in Canada before going into hiding and avoiding CBSA deportation orders -- have "abused a valuable privilege and are no longer welcome," Toews told reporters.

Later on the Sun News Network show The Source, he told host Ezra Levant, "we may not have been as vigilant as we should" to avoid "shortcomings" in a system that too often let people elude a deportation order after release from prison.

He told Levant the 30 men and two women he agreed to identify pose the worst threat of 1,400 serious foreign criminals believed to be hiding in the Toronto area -- who the government is debating adding to the public list.

Releasing the 62 photos is "putting the interests of law-abiding citizens ahead of criminals," he said.

Toews said people who support the rare move launched in July by him and Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, include law-abiding newcomers.

The former prosecutor and justice minister told Levant he cannot understand objections raised by the Canadian Bar Association and CBC.

The taxpayer-financed national broadcast agency only provided online links to the lists of 30 suspected war criminals and the 32 criminals, Toews said.

Naming Toronto Sun veteran reporter Tom Godfrey, Toews said "pushing our government to move in this direction," is an example of the media playing a "proactive role" in raising important law enforcement issues.

Since the first names were released, he said six were arrested by CBSA agents, four have been deported and U.S. officials arrested a seventh after officials pored over the list.

Toews said one more is believed to have left Canada.

Canada admitted 254,000 immigrants last year, and "we have no reason to make apologies" for trying to deport people convicted of serious crimes after being granted permanent resident status, or crimes against humanity elsewhere, he said.

"Canadians are taking a stand" by supporting naming names and seeking public help, Toews said, adding almost 200 suspected war criminal tips were received.

"The success was even greater than I anticipated," he said.

"Those who believe they are above the law will find no leniency in this country," Toews vowed.

Urging citizens not to "take the law into your own hands," he urged anyone with information to visit the CBSA website, cbsa.gc.ca, or call the toll free hotline, 1-888-502-9060.
