Who's Afraid Of The Big, Bad Town Hall Now?

Chris Weigant | Posted: 8/19/11 09:58 PM ET

“Of course it would be interesting to see how a Republican member of Congress would react to this question, if it were directed at them in a town hall meeting. However, the chances of this happening seem to be dwindling, as Republicans are all but running scared from holding town hall meetings with constituents this particular year. This needs to be forcefully pointed out, whenever possible.

"Republicans have criticized President Obama for making a listening tour through the Midwest recently.

Maybe they'd do better to do some actual listening to their own constituents. I notice there seems to be a trend among Republican House members this year of avoiding their constituents at all costs. Paul Ryan won't meet with people in his home district because he's off on vacation -so he had them arrested instead.

Other GOP officeholders are throwing up roadblocks such as entrance fees to their meetings with the public. Rather than boasting about how many town hall meetings they are holding - as they were doing a few years ago - this Republicans seem to be running scared from their own constituents summer.

For all that talk Republicans spout about 'listening to the American people,' I find it astonishing the lengths some of these Republicans will go to in order to avoid having to hear what their constituents are trying to say to them.

What are the Republicans so afraid of hearing?"

    …….

IMO: I cannot imagine paying a candidate to hear what he will do if elected, or if elected hear why he hasn’t followed thru on his avidly professed promises, but with this inane T-bagger cult disruption we can expect almost anything. But when confronted, they run back into their little holes, and everything becomes strangely quiet as they feverishly learn their next agenda and talking points.

What happened to all their raucous, guntoting placard carrying town hall meetings NOW? Are they that afraid of what the former followers have to say ? Where did they forget about JOBS? After all their chaos making in the recent non-negotiations in the debt raising fiasco which made the S&P downgrade America’s credit rating over the world, they have been strangely silent.

When the going gets tough, the T-baggers run for cover…..

Paul Ryan booed by seniors at one of his own canned town hall meeting.

The man clearly doesn't want to hear from real people. He's a chicken.

Funny how they hold a random congressman to a higher standard than the president they helped put into office. When's the last time Barack met with a group of Americans that weren't handpicked by the DNC?

    Easy answer... never.

He held 5 town hall meetings just last week. Then there was the Twitter "town hall" in July, the Facebook town hall etc.

It's interesting that you would even mention this considering that the right was (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ING up a storm because President Obama was riding around in buses...

Geesh. Do you guys EVER check yourself from week to week for total disconnects from reality?

    Agent,

Do you and the rest of the libs even know the statistics?

67% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans stating they had no town hall meetings scheduled for the recess period.

Your party is the one thats running away from town halls. :sun:

    Whoosh, right over our head.

Ryan and the rest of the chickens are avoiding town hall meetings while criticizing Obama for holding them. Something about a bus.

    Conservatism = chickens.

When they let real people talk, it doesn't end well. It serves as a disruption of the right-wing meme that they are serving the "peoples' mandate" when the people they are supposed to be serving decry what they are doing to this country.

Expect more duck and cover from the right as their corporate masters start pouring cash into the election cycle and the only "interaction" constituents will have w/ the right-wing representatives are the hourly corporate-funded political ads that we will be subjected to.

Romney's attempt at populism ended badly also with "Corporations are People' and I need a bigger mansion. Conservatism -- how do they even survive out there in reality.

You seem to be free associating, as usual.

Can you ever, I mean ever, post something relevant to the topic?

That's interesting because the nolabels.org list shows Nancy Pelosi, and Raul Grijalva not having any events scheduled during the recess, yet they held one along with Barbara Lee on the 16th as part of the "Speak out For Good Jobs Now!" tour sponsored by the Progressive Caucus.

Seems like nolabels.org's info is less than complete...

Yet when Obama goes out to town halls, the Rightwing Noise Machine goes into paroxysms criticizing him for not driving a Pinto.

    Typical conservative hypocrisy.
