Just out of curiosity did you allow Josh Marthers or Brad Miller make the decision for you on whether to evacuate for Irene?

Myself I went out and checked the NRML http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/tc_pages/tc_home.html and laughed at my neighbors who went to Columbia

NHC lists the Max sustained wind speed. That is the East side of the storm with respect to the ground. That's mostly ocean in this event.

Check out my hurricane, Charlie. I'm in Port Charlotte, the 'good' side. Charlie had sustained winds of 140+mph and they turned Punta Gorda, on the 'bad' side to rubble. My home only had to deal with ~110 mph winds. Check out the stop action satellite bit. The hurricane splits the difference between the two towns. PC needed new roofs on every house. PG had to rebuild from empty slabs.

Congratulations on your excellent preparations , sounds like you got yourself well squared away in advance of Irene .. [IMG]

Being a genuine Hillbilly myself , here in Sackett's Land , I'm always ready to spot a kindred spirit ... and me and the boys say " Howdy " http://www.stovebolt.com/gallery/images/koteskey2.jpg

My lands a 'goshin , a lady what can sharpen a chain saw , all to herself , and has her own files to boot , now that there is a country gal from who flung the chunk [IMG]

But what in the world is she doing putting heavy blankets over the glass for ? ? ? What glass ? ? ? and what for ? ? ? Is it true that the hills have eyes , or is that the glass has eyes ? ? ? [IMG]

and making tons of ice cream , , , now that's a real special treat , yeehaw ,

Can I Please be your neighbor ? ? ? Me and the boys would sure make ourselves handy :)

    @Ezra - retired Navy

@ everyone else I watched an hour of CNN/FOX/ MSNBC/Weatehr Channel this morning where talking heads were bravely ignoring the hurricane to protect us as little old ladies walked their chihuahuas in the background announcing the hurricane force wind and devastating flooding before logging in and checking a few sites

    Atlantic City

    http://www.wunderground.com/US/NJ/Atlantic_City.html

as of 9 am EST highest wind 33 mph at the Long Island station , most stations were between 1 and 10 mph

    Manhattan -
    http://www.wunderground.com/US/NY/Manhattan.html

@9 am highest wind 15 mph

    East Hampton NY

    http://www.wunderground.com/US/NY/East_Hampton.html

@9 am highest wind 12 MPH

I can't believe the BS spewing from the News networks, do they think people might not stick their heads outside in NY and NJ and go WTF are they talking about

BTW I am not hammering the forecasters here. I think they have done a great job of forecasting the track of this storm, and NOAA’s NHC has been fantastic at keeping the country updated. Information is flowing smoothly. It is simply the over the top actions and what appears to be misinformation from the news media I am criticizing.

That and staged BS like this

Is there a better picture to illustrate just how friggin stupid Obama thinks his supporters are, what few of the idiots are actually left, and how the liberal scum press will do anything to keep their Obama kneepads working ?

Four days to address the 'system worked' panty bomber.

Two weeks to address the Gulf oil spill.

Three weeks to make any decision on Libya.

    Months to figure out Afghanistan.

30 months and counting to deal with J-O-B-S.

This one photo op won't counter the abdication of ordinary Presidential leadership.

While i agree, one should be prepared. You also have to be smart about it. Use your head and evaluate the situation rather than allowing some fool on your tv set work you in to a frenzyy. You should ask yoursel at a minimum, these questions.. How strong is this hurricane? Where do i live relative to where it will most likely hit? If it is a cat 3 or lower the only 2 things you should worry about is living right on the coast, or in a low lieing area.. Or perhaps if your home is very old or not built well. Then all you need to do is perhaps make sure you have candles, lots of batteries, water and food. Probabaly enoigh for 5 days. And yes, fuel as well. You should be able to ride it out if you live off the coast beyond the reach of the influx of water. and as long as your neighborhood has sufficient drainage and you live more than a few feet above sea level.. You will be fine. I would be willing to bet more people wew hurt actually preparing or evacuating from this huricane than the huricane itself.

All the fear is simply hype created by FOX News. They want this to be a disaster so they can blame President Obama. It's pure sick GOP politics and it disgusts me.

You people (Americans) are being duped by FOX daily.

Yeah, they warned before Katrina too, so NOLA just ignored the warning so that the libs could blame GW.

    1. The dim witted do not see the absolute hollowness of Barack Obama. They are simpletons to the obvious machinations of this charlatan and his "media team", and for that they cannot be held accountable.

    2. Everyone who even has a glimmer of intelligence can see his manipulative fingerprint on anything he comes across. PR is one thing, being actually disassociative in his nature, is frightening, and those who see this in him and still sing his praises...are callously tied more to party than country and image above reality and they weaken a nation.

    3. The media and those who serve as his team are reprehensible, as they are not simply a witness to this malaise of a POTUS, they are part of this forgery, and if imprisonment where ever an option for these contemptible jackals for willfully putting this man in the WH and selling his poison for 3 years, it should be taken.

    4. Again, great prep thread for preparedness, OP.

This thing was obvious, the power was not there way before it hit NY, any moron knows it losses steam as it comes up the coast, there was absolutely no need for what he did, now all day the media will try to spin off reasons for all this crap, they got egg on their face. It's not as though NY can afford all this fuss over nothing more than a Tropical storm, hell I have seen worse conditions while playing a round of golf,,a complete waste!!
The man is a pain in the ass and should be voted out....

Like many ordinary politicians he's a Poll watcher, except when it came to try dumping a Mosque at ground zero. There can be any number of reasons for that, I'll go with the obvious.....

As predicted, Irene was just a big rainy wind-storm by the time it got to NYC. It lost its status as a hurricane last night. I do envy the New Yorkers all that lovely rain....
