The "party of life" is at it again. Blocking funding for critical supplies needed by disaster victims- in the US. That's some real patriotism isn't it?

Republicans block Senate disaster aid bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans blocked an effort Monday by Senate Democrats to quickly pass a $7 billion aid package for victims of recent natural disasters like Hurricane Irene, tornadoes in the Midwest and the South and floods along the Mississippi, Missouri and other rivers.

On a 53-33 vote, the Senate rejected an attempt by Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to bring up a bill that Democrats had hoped to use to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency's depleted disaster fund. Democrats needed 60 votes to advance the measure.

Reid said FEMA has spent almost $400 million in the past two weeks on emergency help like food and shelter following Irene and has only about $300 million left.

President Barack Obama on Friday asked Congress for $500 million to make sure the disaster fund doesn't run out of cash before the end of the month. He also officially asked for $4.6 billion for the upcoming budget year that starts Oct. 1.

Earlier Monday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Republicans will attach a disaster aid package to must-pass legislation for keeping the government fully running past Sept. 30. That stopgap spending bill is likely to advance next week.

"They're playing around the edges of what really needs to be done," Reid complained, saying hundreds of millions of dollars is needed to rebuild places like Joplin, Mo., where a tornado in May destroyed more than 7,000 homes and 10 school buildings and killed 159 people.

What's the problem here? Not a single dime gets spent without an attempt to force a cut somewhere. That is how this works. You'd think you liberals would fully understand the strategy that has been kicking your butts since forever.

We'll add whats needed to the stopgap measure to ensure Democrat compliance to GOP demands.

It's really that simple. Yes, we're holding every dime hostage. Get used to it. We're playing for keeps, if you don't like it either win another supermajority in 2012 or move to Mexico.

What I get is that the GOP is nothing but asshats now, and hopefully your crime lords will get tossed out on their asses next year.

Do you have a problem with making sure the money gets to the people who deserve it instead of the crooks?

Real classy. Profits over life right? Your opinions are downright pathetic and hateful. Your kind will be gone come 2012.

    Are you daft?

Is it OK to bail out people today with your children's and grandchildren's money? I don't think so - it's called stealing.

Real elephants are more helpful than political ones after disasters now.

When bush* was president, the rightwingers rescinded the pay-go rule, and spent like a bunch of drunken sailors on leave (but with other peoples' money). The wingnuts only want to cut spending when there's a democrat in the white house.

Thats' why the wingnuts on the right never propose balanced budget amendments when there's a republican in the white house

Don't even get me started on a BBA...They notion that it will even pass the house of reps is laughable. 2/3 majority to advance to the senate?? LOL not a chance.

Yep, just like you libs said for 2010 when you took the worst shellacking since the 1930's. Unemployment still over 9%, underemployment over 16%, gasoline hovering just under $4 a gallon and food prices rising like an Atlas rocket and somehow you think the Democrats will not only retain control but make gains? That's the funniest thing I've ever heard.

People blame the republican congress now...Things have gotten worse at an even faster rate since the day they took office.

Considering the Federal Limousine fleet is up 73% since Obama took office, I don't think Obama would have any trouble cutting his discretionary spending to offset the disaster relief aid. Or he can cut one of his many expensive Government programs to pay for it.

He won't do that though, will he liberals? It's just easier to print more money. After all, it's not like having a huge money supply floating out there leads to any adverse consequences, right?

They prevented Obama from keeping his dictatorial stranglehold on the entire Government. Who knows how many disastrous policies they have saved us from?

Hmm people would disagree with you. After the debt ceiling mess people hate the tea party and republicans more than they do democrats. What your kind doesn't understand is people don't care about balanced budgets and tax cuts for rich people. The people want jobs by any means necessary. If that means spending another 400B then so be it. People don't want to hear about cutting medicare and SS just so we can give rich people more handouts. You'll find that out soon enough though.

I thought Cantor was singing a different back in 2004...

""I want to thank President Bush for his quick action in helping out the area's homeowners and business owners. The sheer volume of rain far exceeded everybody's expectations, and a lot of people are in need of help. The magnitude of the damage suffered by the Richmond area is beyond what the Commonwealth can handle and that is why I asked the President to make federal funds available for the citizens affected by Gaston," said Cantor. [Cantor Press Release, 9/3/04]

I think he forgot about his offsetting budget cuts agenda back then.
