    http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/25/us/california-racial-bake-sale/index.html

(CNN) -- Campus Republicans at the University of California Berkeley have cooked up a storm of controversy with their plans for a bake sale.

But it's not your everyday collegiate fundraiser they've got in mind. They've developed a sliding scale where the price of the cookie or brownie depends on your gender and the color of your skin.

During the sale, scheduled for Tuesday, baked goods will be sold to white men for $2.00, Asian men for $1.50, Latino men for $1.00, black men for $0.75 and Native American men for $0.25. All women will get $0.25 off those prices.

"The pricing structure is there to bring attention, to cause people to get a little upset," Campus Republican President Shawn Lewis, who planned the event, told CNN-affiliate KGO. "But it's really there to cause people to think more critically about what this kind of policy would do in university admissions."

Lewis says it's a way to make a statement about pending legislation that would let the California universities consider race or national origin during the admission process.

But the young Republicans have been on the receiving end of a fierce backlash. Reaction has been so negative they've been forced to cancel their customary lunchtime tabling duties, according to KGO.

Lewis told CNN's Don Lemon that they expected a certain amount of opposition but not the level of outrage they experienced.

"We didn't expect the volume, the amount of response that we got," Lewis said. "In the first few hours, hundreds of posts on our Facebook page. And the tone of some of the responses -- we expected people to be upset. We didn't expect personal threats to be made. They were implicit and explicit threats made to the organizers of the event, from burning down the table to throwing our baked goods at us and other kinds of physical threats."

Tim Wise, author of the book "White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son," calls the bake sale a "sarcastic and rather smarmy slap at people of color."

"There are a lot of ways to make a point about your disagreement with affirmative action," Wise told Lemon Saturday night.

"I get the joke," he continued. "How very original. It's been done for 15 years. The point that I think needs to be made ... is that by the time anyone steps on a college campus ... there has already been 12- to 13-years of institutionalized affirmative action for white folks, that is to say, racially embedded inequality, which has benefited those of us who are white. And it's only at the point of college admissions that these folks seem to get concerned with color consciousness."

Lewis insists, however, that Campus Republicans will go ahead with their bake sale and are committed to their controversial pricing structure.

Wow. What a bunch of idiots. There is a lot of ways to bring up points against AA but purposely trying to (*)(*)(*)(*) people off like this is ridiculous, and they said they "were not expecting people to be this upset" lol. bunch of fails.

Why are people getting so angry about Republicans expanding government programs/ideals to the sale of baked goods? Some people are never satisfied.

Lefties cannot handle when their outcome based "equality" (read: institutional racism/bigotry) efforts are revealed to young minds they're trying to indoctrinate.

Interesting that when those same principles are applied to college admissions and hiring practices, that's okay. But apply it to a bake sale and people get pissed.

I want a cookie but I don't have $2.00. Can I have a discount because I'm Irish? We were persecuted too.

No...you will need a government guaranteed student loan.....where you'll run into more leftie "equality" in the application/approval process.

Good for the students. I didn't even apply to US schools for undergraduate studies due to all of that crap -- affirmative action, legacy, etc. England has a much more meritorious, egalitarian admission system for higher education that doesn't traffic in reverse racism and privileges for the wealthy. Everything is based on demonstrable intellectual ability (i.e. exam scores and a holistic face-to-face interview) A student's financial situation will be taken into account for aid purposes, and nothing more. No race, no privileges for alumni or donors; in short, no bull(*)(*)(*)(*).

If the students sold the cookies for the same price to every race the left still would have been mad because minorities make less money on average than whites and demanded a discount for them.

I think the core outrage stems from there even being conservatives or California conservatives on the campus. It just gets worse from there. That is supposed to be the liberal stronghold and most mind twisting university on the planet.

The core outrage comes from being ignorant and insensitive to a program that benefits minorities and the country in general.

Hey, I lived in Pasadena once and we had an Armenian mayor.

Guess who got favored for government contracts on the affirmative action list?

    Armenians.

It's all about cutting up the government pie and saving a slice for the politicians.

Ahaha is this one of those rare times that racial profiling is a PROSITIVE thing?? $.25 per cookie instead of $2.00?

But really, who are the ones getting mad? Whites or Minorities? Whites are mad at high cookie prices and minorities mad at low cookie prices? WHATS GOING ON??

A student community that is entirely bereft of independent thought. As another poster said, Berkeley is little more than a propaganda machine when it comes to any subjects other than the sciences.

With my liberal flower hat on:
LOL. This is hilarious. Conservatives who have no money and are pandering for chump change. LOL. What has happened to all the wealthy and privilaged republicans, you know the real ones, not the wannabe I think therefor I am band wagon republicans.

Everyone knows republicans will not sacrifice time or money for petty thing that will not benifit them personaly. This is a very low sinking of republican desperation.

Sorry forgot to write in double space and 5 word sentances.

It seems to me that their main mistake was expecting rationality from human beings.

I don't see why anyone would actually get upset over this. You might disagree with their fundamental point or think it was a rather brash, silly and misleading way to present it but it's hardly worth getting upset about.
