In other news, US students were pepper sprayed in the face for sitting on the ground - defended and encouraged by the US right.

It can happen in the US, and it would be encouraged by the US right and it's agenda of condemning everyone who is not like them.

when you keep telling lies, its no wonder your warnings fall on deaf ears.

where is the EVIDENCE that adultery in Aceh is punishable by stoning to death?

also ... I think the Aceh Police are having a hard enough time keeping their own "clean"

Indonesia is massive! It has an incredible amount of islands. I travelled Bali, Java, Lombok etc... This year, even in the most remote places, where I saw no Westerners at all, they were the most friendly people I've ever met. They always wanted to come over and chat and ask about where I came from. They were fiercely pround in Jakarta of having a place where Christians, Muslims and other religions all lived along side each other.

Now, there are places in the most remote places of all the islands, there are extremists, just don't go there.

    not really ....

there are other groups that are more problematic.

schoolies week, when thousands of drunken teenagers congregate in certain areas .. is more of an issue than muslim immigrants in general

Yes, to me banning certain hair cuts is nonsense, but then again, so is banning low rider jeans.

And this is the example of Islamic tolerance and democracy always expounded upon by the pedophile worshipers and their supporters?

It's the most populous Muslim majority country on the planet, and the one always claimed by Muslims and their apologists as how Islam and liberty are compatible.

Well then obviously they are compatible because the secular Indonesian government is allowing these people to have their own laws. You didnt realise you just argued against your own point there did ya champ?

obviously you have never been to Indonesia, and have never bothered to learn anything about the country.

someone who thinks that Aceh is representative of Indonesia really is just demonstrating their ignorance of the region.

lmfao if their is Sharia law then there is no secular government a government which allows theocrats to create and enforce their own religious edicts within the country then that is not a secular government that is a theocratic government, Islam and civil liberties are antithetical concepts, Islam is imperialistic totalitarianism.

I'll take your word for it, but I've never had an interest in visiting, personally.

I prefer to limit my travel to the First World (for multiple reasons).

    I understand.

its a bit like that for me when I see things reported in the US on news sites.

every dayI read a report about some lunatic american committing some bizarre murder. there's also usually something about incredibly stupid americans who, and then there's stuff aboutthe religious right, the loonies who politics and so on.

clearly, the US is full of murderous, stupid, fanatical right wing fundamentalists.

on the other hand, I have been to Indonesia several times, and know many Indonesians.

they are incredibly normal people. quite a few that I know are Muslims, but I know a lot of christians as well. the Balinese I have met are usually Hindu.

In Indonesia itself, among the Muslims you see people who wear muslim dress, and those who don't. for a lot, religion isn't a big thing, I would say the percentage who take their religion seriously is more than I see in Australia, but less than the percentage of americans who seem to be god botherers.

I'm also missing out on the chance of being kidnapped or getting an awful digestive virus if I were to drink some of the local water or try food from the wrong place.

none of these things have ever happened to me, but then I guess I'm pretty sensible most of the time (not always).

I would hate to be so afraid of the world out there that I ended up depriving myself of some of the best experiences of my life.

I like to travel, but I don't understand the desire to see areas that are considerably less developed.

I don't find anything novel about poverty. If I want to see poverty, all I have to do is go to the bad side of my city -- and that's not even nearly as bad as what most of the world's population has to deal with.

And when it comes to people from very different countries, that's what immigration is for. People come here from all across the world, so I don't have to come to them. We have a lot of different African ethnic groups that live here, actually. We also have a lot of Southeast Asians.

Ironically, the only people who don't usually come here are in countries I'd like to visit -- America's peers among the OECD. This is one more reaon I prefer visiting Europe over most of the rest of the world.

I guess I see beyond the poverty, and the lack of development.

I find the cultural differences fascinating - but more than that, I find the similarities that we share and the ease of connecting with people from vastly different cultures enlightening. sometimes the experience tests me, it virtually always enriches me.

I always try to learn some of the language, and to use it as much as possible.

I prefer more eastern places in general, these societies tend to be more organic and the people more friendly.

There are quite a few American cops that would do the same thing if they thought they could get away with it. How many social conservatives are in favor of Mohawk haircuts?

    surely not!

you guys value freedom of expression.

Indonesia, like a few other nations in the region (not all muslim) has only in the last few decades moved away from totalitarianism ... the general populace is still old fashioned ... but in the US you wouldn't get that kind of attitude among the working age population ... would you?
