1) Pagans & Solstice Worshippers celebrated for about 15 mins while the sun came up.

2) Atheists celebrated another day of being alive.

and,

3) Christians celebrated "Thursday."

The Swastika had in Germany not a specific background before Hitler came.

I measure the evolutionary facts; the symbol existed before germany and the solstice has been occurring before nazi. Even ask-a-Nazi! Knowledge has evolved too and just because a wingnut represents a German flag don't mean that one represents Germany. That would be like believing hitler represented all ashkanazi.

I rather like the symbol of change and peace.

It would make a fine solstice of 12/2012 if ballistic missiles appeared as if the stars were falling.

How does one celebrate the winter solstace? Is this some pagan celebration where everyone dances around an evergreen tree naked?

 

The Nazi-flag with the Swastika had nothing to do with Germany and Germans. It was a product of Hitler for his political party without any concrete german tradition. The Swastika was before he misused it only a diffuse symbol for fun and happyness - and that's all what made this symbol worthful for the Nazis. Hitler gave the dynamic touch "fire-wheel of solstice" and today it's a mad symbol for death and destruction.

Social Darwinism (biological theories misused for rules how to live and to fight) was also a very concrete fact of the Nazi-ideology. Knowledge for example follows not biological mechanisms. It makes not really sense to say "knowledge evolves". Knowledge is not a living structure what's able to modify itselve to fit. We are the living structure looking for knowledge. We are deciding this. But we are not "the evolution". Our human knowlegde grows if enough philosophers and scientists are able to live in cultural traditions. With other words: We are teaching our children how to use knowledge. This doesn't mean the people survived in a better way who had found this knowledge. Archimedes for example became murdered from an roman soldier while he made some calculations.
