This may just be a test shot. Obama is FINALLY taking a less conciliatory stance towards the Republicans' Congressional shenanigans. This is just a way to see how far they want to play it.

The center-left and left, as well as a few righties, are waiting for the President to stand up to the Republicans. Pro forma sessions are an abomination in the eyes of the Constitution. If the Republicans decide to press the matter it could result in pro formas being tossed out completely. If by chance they are upheld as a way to keep Congress in session then the next logical "go (*)(*)(*)(*) yourself" move by the Obama Administration would be:

Adjourning Congress and making recess appointments would be like dropping a nuke but there are plenty of people who would respect such a move considering the current environment in Congress. My guess is that he would wait a few months to see if the economy continues to improve thus shoring up political "capital".

I would love to see the faces on the t-baggers and their Republican cohorts if it went that far.

I would laugh for days and wake up with warm glow in my stomach each morning knowing that somewhere righties' heads were exploding at record rates.

Bush did this all the time - as when he appointed that thug John Bolton to the UN - and I don't recall any cries of "Dictator!" from the right at all. I hope he's through trying to "compromise" with Republicans whose campaign strategy is to keep the country on the brink until the next election as they've been doing for the last 3 years.

 

In other words, it lasted until precisely when I said it lasted. The next election.

1) President Obama is well aware of the congressional gridlock. He is duty bound to do what Congress refuses to do. Just doing his job.....

2) Bush started it, Obama used it to forego another hostage taking session with the republican/T-bagger cntingent that has stifled any meaningful legislation since 2010.

3) There will be a Constitutional Amendment to re-evaluate the separation of powers which became so blurred during the GW Bush tenure. But in thiscase, President Obama was well within his powers to appoint a directror when Congress refused to do their duty as elected officials. End of story.

 

This is hilarious. Why do you think Obama will be able to get away with this? Because Bush "wiped his ass with the Constitution" the whole time he was in office. He governed with secret Executive Orders, signing statements to exempt him and his cabal from the laws passed by Congress, had the NSA spying on American citizens, condoned the outing of a covert CIA agent, approved and authorized torture of detainees, refused to honor subpoenaes issued by the Congress for documents and WH staff to testify and defied the law of the land at every turn. IIRC, he called the Constitution "a (*)(*)(*)(*)ed piece of paper" or something to that effect.

All of which makes the puling and whining about a recess appointment by Obama nothing short of the worst kind of hypocrisy. IMHO.

 

We were squealing like stuck pigs when the boots were on Bush's feet and he was supposedly operating under the "War Powers Act" where he claimed he had absolute and irrefutable authority to override any law or act of Congress - and did. This can of worms was opened a long time ago and one of our main complaints was that it would allow future presidents to claim the same powers. I don't recall any of you objecting to it then.

 

I'd say it is too. He is showing the American voters his desire to be a Kim Jong Ill style dictator as opposed to President of the United States.

So exactly how did Bush circumvent anyone in Congress? You must be confusing Bush with Obama who sent our Military into action in Libya without any authorization from Congress what so ever. Add to that the orders to assassinate an American, Anwar al-Awlaki without his constitutional right as a citizen of due process and signing a bill that allows for the indefinite incarceration of American Citizens with out a trial or due process and you get a flat out dictator. If you applaud that perhaps you can apply for North Korean citizenship, you'd love it there.

Why is Obama bypassing the house of congress which his own party controls? strange...Obama is a terrible politician.

 

There are some 85 vacant positions on the federal court benches with appointees being blocked by Republicans as well as heads of various agencies who are unable to operate as they should without them. Repubs are deliberately preventing the government from operating efficiently as part of their "make Obama fail" policy with no regard to the effect on the American people whom they could care less about.

 

He does have the right to make appointments while congress is in recess. But, as with ALL presidents who use this tactic, is a lowbrow play. But, with Obama, its par for the course.

 

Democrats did the same to Bush. Where was your outcry then?
