Libertarians are replacing the GOP socially conservative corporatists. Proven by how Ron Paul is destroying the competition in young voters.

Democrats will be left as the pro-war, anti-liberty, corporatist party. Because you can never manage to elect people who will not be bought off to rule your all-encompassing government.

I have not expressed a view of the Democrats. Least of all a lofty one.

I would like to see a political system in the US that frees Americans from the shackles of both the parties that play havoc with the electoral system you currently have.

You would not like a multi-party system though. It would bring principles and values into play the like of which you would find deeply disturbing.

Don't worry, young voters eventually grow up and wise up. Those old "GOP socially conservative corporatists" were once pot-smoking hippies. Look at the GOP presidential field. Romney was an independent. Perry, Bachmann, and Cain were Democrats. A full half of the Republican presidential candidates became Republicans in adulthood.

This thread was started as a way to find out why people vote Republican, when (in your eyes) Republicans don't represent their best interests.

To further understand your stance and point, I'm curious as why you ask the question exactly? Are you insinuating by this question that people should be voting Democratic? Or Independent? Or any other 3rd party? Is your question posed because you think no parties truly favor the populace? Are you an Anarchist? Purely curious?

Answering these questions may help me explain my dissenting opinion better. It would help me to know on what level you can't understand a Republican vote, and I might be able to shed some light. If your point was that our government needs changes made to become efficient (and both parties have failed to achieve this) my response would be completely different than if your point was that Democrats should be garnering more votes because they can do a better job.

It looks like somewhat of an answer for my question is seen here, so I'll go into an explanation along these lines, if you want to clarify further I could clarify my answer further.

1st off I'd like to say if your point all along is that we need a multi-party system, then your original phrasing of the question :Why do Americans Vote Republican is deeply flawed for several reasons.

1.) This question sounds Democratic because you've only asked 1 side to justify their voting habits, immediately making them defensive and seeing you as a liberal who can't understand opposing views.

2.) You are going to get responses along reason #1's line of thinking, and not truly make your point or get responses that understand your point.

3.) This thread question would be much more aptly named: "Why do Americans vote Democrat or Republican?", or "Why are there only 2 dominant parties in the US government?" or "American's need a multi-party political system because ...". You would be getting answers to your real question this way.

2ndly, I'm curious as to what deeply disturbing principles and values you think would come in to play with a multi-party system.

3rd, Why do you think New Zealand's legislature (Which is ~80% National or Labour Party) is a good example of such a multi-party system.

And Lastly, in response to the current form you pose the question: Why do Americans vote Republican (and not vote more for different parties), the answer is most simple. We need campaign finance reform. Only those 2 parties receive the vast majority of it to finance overwhelming palm greasing, credibility gaining (for themselves), and credibility destruction (for their opponents). In this way people may vote Republican (or Democrat) as opposed to a 3rd party due to not believing that party is electable. They would feel they "wasted" their vote.

This feeling of a "wasted" vote bears credibility also as sometimes (and this is the only way a viable 3rd party can emerge given current campaign financing) a independently vastly wealthy individual does run outside these 2 parties a la Ross Perot, but they cannot garner more than a few % of the popular vote. Sadly, not only must this individual be vastly wealthy, but must also be extremely charismatic, which he was not.

Does that answer your question? And if so, didn't you already realize this?

You asked why would anyone with an income like mine would vote republican and your main argument as to why they shouldn't is taxes. I am just saying I vote based on values not just taxes and when I think the republican will express those values better I vote republican. I never said that the republicans always support them best (I was very much against the patriot act). My example was I always voted for a democrat for governor because.

Short answer why would I vote republican? I do when I think they would serve my values best but not all the time.

Republicans should shift their agenda to being restorationists instead of conservatives. To conserve would mean you want to conserve this:

To restore means you want to restore this:

Deer meat is actually really healthy for you. I prefer it to beef any day of the week.

What would be the difference? The only reason they exist as two parties is to give the illusion that there are major differences between the two. Once you realize there aren't, then you realize that we are actually controlled by a one party state.

People would rather be screwed by their own people who share their beliefs than people who don't.

But neither the Democratic nor the Republican party cares for the little guys anymore.

They only care about their own corporate interests.

Its really very simple why some Americans vote Republican. I would explain, but it would cause an angry response from those people., and my new resolution is to be peaceful this year, considering the Mayans and Nostradamus and that 1 mile long asteroid scheduled to near miss the earth as close as the orbit path of our satelites, in 2024.

Im absolutely certain that our brilliant physicists and mathematicians have calculated this trajectory to the last decimal, and can reassure us all that its just going to be a near miss. Nothing really at all to worry about. As long as no other unforeseen deflection caused by other debris happens.

    @ Awryly

You can't answer any of the hard questions, as is evidenced by your lack of an answer to ANY of the above post. You like to spout rhetoric without substance. Your lack of a response has showed your inability to logically back your claims.

Why do any Americans bother voting at all?

    Elections are rigged.

Define "Rigged". If you mean we need campaign finance reform, then I agree. If you mean enough people can vote for a candidate and their votes won't be counted, than I say no way.

Not really. They are 12,000 miles away.

Unfortunately my neighbour is an irksome cretin.

I would be within my rights to think he was American. But he not obese and speaks proper.
