You seem to have difficulty assessing risk. You remind me of smokers years ago who refused to accept they could get lung cancer.

Economic incompetence. Without the massive federal economic stimulus, there is no state that wouldn't have a faltering economy caused by a significant portion of consumers staying away from businesses that could spread the virus.

Guesswork. What the government did was the economic incompetence. No hysteria in my lifetime outdoes Covid 19.

No, not "guesswork" ... I'm an economist. We have so far saved the economy. What we did to save it could have been done with better, but that's another matter.

What happens next depends upon the amount of virus circulating, vaccines and treatments, and the level of stimulus. Less virus and less stimulus is better, of course, but more virus caused by having no truly effective early treatment (they're working on them) or a low vaccination rate, will require more stimulus to prevent an economic downturn.
It is what it is. Unless to have some way of convincing people, often older, to look past what they perceive to be the covid health risk, your comment is largely irrelevant.

I'm not an economist and I say you are wrong. I think some disruptions could have occurred along with some of the shortages we still face but government shutting down the economy was far more devastating than anything old peoples' attitudes would have caused. Since we did not get an economy without government meddling, your premise is guesswork as I said. Mine, at least, is based on what actually happened.

My friends stepmom just died of liver cancer yesterday in her early 60's, never drank or smoked a day in her life.
You mistake "difficulty assessing risk" with accepting there is a certain amount of risk inherant in our daily life.

Come on, @CenterField is trying to help you. Doctors dedicate their working lives to help others.

There isn't time for long-term study for reasons we all understand.

If you don't take the vaccine and bring it home to your loved ones...

Imagine that, wishing death on others tends to have that effect. I can't believe I need to explain this to someone of your lofty caliber.

Since my loved one is now in long term nursing care and it's just me and the dog and my pet snake, not a big worry.

It happens. A colleague who ate the right foods, exercised, maintained his weight, got pancreatic cancer and was gone in four months. It happens.
I was thinking of you. Of course, there's risk and the mRNA vaccines appear to be a good way of limiting the risk of catching covid.

I've been married 54 years and we're both "on the outside." We came into this world alone and most likely will leave the same way. The human condition.

Not "old peoples' attitudes would have caused," but did cause. They significantly pulled back spending and have not in many cases fully returned, or even returned at all, to doing things old people do--dine out, travel, etc. You can't subtract even 10% of the economy and not have a recession. We've saved it so far with massive government handouts. This from last year...

    3E124589-986D-49E1-BD92-1CDBE1F716FD.jpeg

Even the bounce back was weak.
If the government had not "meddled," we would be in a depression right now.
I think you believe you know what happened, but I doubt you do.

We have a fit of pent up spending at the moment. If the Delta variant takes hold in some of these states with low vaccination rates, we could see another wave. How that plays out depends on the size of the wave and how much stimulus remains.

I understand we disagree. But I do appreciate the chart. It looks like things were on the way up prior to the mailing of the checks. I think it resulted from improved confidence but I can see you don't believe that. Depression is a serious word. Luckily we were never close to one.

The point about the graph is that the return to spending stalled out. The spending pullback early on was an overreaction based on fear.
The only reason we weren't close is there was no stomach for a repeat of 1929-33.

Demand in the economy is consumer spending, business spending and investment, and government spending (and exports). If consumer spending drops off, business spending will likely, too, and government has to pick up the slack to avoid a downturn.

You do realize the claim he wishes death on you would likely be considered a personal attack (my guess) by the moderators.

Of course I don't wish death on him. I merely said that he's a candidate for the Darwin Award (which is a fact; I'm merely highlighting this fact; and it's a fact of HIS doing, not a fact of MY doing). I never said I WANT him to collect the Darwin Award. Much the opposite, I said in all letters that if he decided to get vaccinated I'll applaud and be delighted.

In previous exchanges I tried to help this guy. I patiently explained things to him, and tried to help him in getting an informed decision (and he actually did acknowledge my explanations as reasonable, at the time). But like I said, I'm past this point now. These people will never learn. So I no longer have the stomach to continue to cajole and convince. The truth about these vaccines and this virus is out there, widely available. I've linked to reputable sources multiple times. People prefer to believe in junk science and conspiracy theory instead? Well, that's their problem, now (and they do damage others, too, and the economy).

Of course not. But when no more crackpot cards are left to play, they play little victims.

Yep, rational discussions are not possible. It truly is a waste of time. Some guy who works a cash register at some midnight hole knows far more about immunology and virology than a medical expert like you, and the nation's leading experts.

The age of information led to the age of disinformation, let to the age of Holiday Inn Experts.

We all would, but probably no one more than someone who made a career out of helping people with their medical problems. It's all rather silly.
I'm shocked by the low vaccination rates in some states.

I hope we can improve on these numbers.

I can't believe people who think like this are real people. Worse yet, you got 4 likes.

God bless the human race. Clearly we are a failed species. Exhibit A, I offer this post.

What’s even more astounding are people blindly believing a never used before experimental treatment unapproved by the FDA with only 6 months of testing is safe just because politicians and the media tell them it’s safe.

Well bless your submissive heart, good for you.
Are you a 'medical professional' too?

Do I need to also explain to you, the difference between talking to and talking down to people?

Oh, now you talk around me instead of down to me? For such a highly educated person, do you not realize the difference between talking to and talking down to someone? I guess that's where the god complex ego, gets in the way.

And you 'merely' said this (which you omitted most of)
    '
^prime candidate for the Darwin Award.
Believes in quackery and junk science and thinks the vaccines are more dangerous than this EXTREMELY DANGEROUS virus (see post #26)"

So lets shame others and talk down to them and expect to be heard, then wonder in bafflement why others become hostile and communication breaks down....

    Jesus wept...
