Nice piece which is mostly told through the eyes of one person and how the times have shifted for him and the world.

California outlawed affirmative action for state schools and as a result began using at a much earlier time what other schools are using now.

    Why was this approach attempted?

So this new approach was implemented at public and private schools across the nation. As is typical it's just new words for the same old thing.

However what was revealed back in California remains true for today. Also the article notes the history of the "holistic review" and who it was used against in the past.

So as we've seen mentioned in other threads, when schools seem to want to give up quantitative measures like grades, or benchmark testing or school forgo using the SAT and so on, it's so they don't have to really state admission criteria. You fuzz the borders and you're free to do and admit who you want.

Not only is this "rewind" a big problem. The motivations behind it are far from clear. As the focus of our story notes....

It should be hard to not support a meritocratic approach. There's a big difference between righting a pass wrong and simply reorganizing everything including merit in the name of diversity.

It's hard to imagine anyone having to say no to Yang. The resume is beyond impressive.

You do too much right. I guess that automatically makes you less respectable and likable.

As to what happened to Yang?

Newly minted conservative from such treatment. Sounds great to me.

Kenny Xu has two books including School of Woke, about Critical Race Theory coming out soon.

There's a lot more. It's a nice read and a great primer for the pending court case that will likely be released later this week by the Supreme Court.

    What are your thoughts?

Admissions to publicly financed institutions will be based on merit.

It will be interesting to see if privately funded private schools will be allowed to continue to discriminate based on race, ethnicity, sex, etc..

AA might get banned but it won’t go away. Remember what Obama said about ethnic names on resumes?

To make admissions based on merit there needs to be no check boxes - no race, no gender, no names, nothing. Instead people should apply using their social security numbers, email addresses or something like that.

Shortened just for your question. Hope you don't mind.

I am conflicted either way TBH. I guess I don't really mind it if they are aiming to have a student body representative of the population and it is used as a tool to sort out too many comparable qualified applicants. I think, however, it has gotten a lot sticker than that. At my high school's scholarships assembly, a black girl I knew fairly well got a full ride to so a state school. She told me it was for high academic achievement. Her class ranking was almost 40 below me and her SAT score was less than 1000. I only got a bunch of partial scholarships from local groups that added up to about 60% of my tuition. I think there is a culture of lower expectations that piggybacks along with AA and that is where I have a bigger beef.

Interesting, if that had been the case the whole time there would have been no need for affirmative action.

AA is no longer needed. We are and have been passed that for awhile.

The article pretty much nailed it. The Ivy league has been preparing for this for a while, and used Covid to drop standardized testing and they're not bringing it back, so they will continue to have "holistic" admissions process, and still pick students based on race, just like they did before.

I imagine the racial makeup of the Ivy league will remain the same after the end of official affirmative action as it was before.

There have been studies in California following the ban of affirmative action:
    1. White and Asian students saw no rise or decline in their acceptance at top-tier, super-selective universities in California.
    2. Black, Hispanics and Native Americans earned about 5% less than if they would have gone to top-tier, super-selective universities in California.
    3. Overall, the end result is that Whites and Asians will go to slightly more selective universities while Black, Hispanics, and Native Americans go to slightly less selective universities.
    4. If it goes nationwide for a ban on affirmative action, then economist Zach Bleemer predicts the following, "an immediate drop in enrollment for underrepresented minority students at highly selective schools."
    5. The economist also predicts that the income gap between Black, Hispanic, and Native Americans and with White and Asian students will grow more significantly than it is now.
The question is, is that economically efficient?

To answer the O/P's question. Here's what will happen. Things will get back to the way they were always supposed to be.
People will be rewarded by equal rights and merit, and not preferential treatment based on race or gender.

people like Trump will never win another election if we end affirmative actions for the smaller States via the EC, the person with the most votes would win again

Stepping back for a moment, we are presented a society in which some identifiable groups of people within it fall below the average level for the society in some aspects.

Affirmative action in education admissions and in hiring practices is but one tool in the toolkit available to rectify imbalances.

The question, broadly, is which imbalances are we, as a society, morally and ethically required to address?

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

    Strawman.

My response to the OP had nothing to do with whether AA was needed 60+ years ago or not. It has to do with the question posed in the title of thread - What happens after the end of Affirmative Action? - which concerns the present and the future.

It has transformed from racism against blacks to racism against whites. But affirmative action is not the answer to any of it.

It was to erase imbalances of racial discrimination in the workforce and education. That is no longer the case nor needed and it's actually in some cases promoted race over merit. The program worked when needed but can't be allowed to promote race ignoring merit.

So no more AA? Does that include Legacy Admissions too?

I'm not clear what legacy admissions have to do with race based discrimination.

It’s also fair, stepping back, to analyze if it’s fair to arbitrarily hold back those who are doing fine to arbitrarily prop up those who are currently falling behind.

It’s entirely possible, that it’s the responsibility of those behind to utilize the already tremendously upward mobility that exists.

after affirmative action a lot of whining white men will discover that they are still too lazy and stupid to be promoted.

aren't affirmative action programs instituted by the corporations and organizations, rather than by government?

That’s some interesting speculation! White women to I suppose!

Regardless if it turns out to be true or not it’s best to allow merit to be the only determinant of hiring and what not. No need to even give the impression otherwise.

"merit" would be an interesting experiment for our nepo driven culture.

    Hi, Moolk.

Sure. There are those who are able to take advantage of the available societal 'ladders'. Good for them. They're not part of our moral responsibility. And you're right in that a case can be made that affirmative action effectively disadvantages some.

But there are also many who, for whatever reason, fall below the norms to the point where we should, morally, become concerned. Helping them is possible and, I believe, desirable.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

My guess is what happens will be similar to what happened after the SC gutted the VRA. Immediately following the decision numerous states under Repub control enacted voter suppression laws since changes to election laws were no longer automatically under DoJ review.
If AA is gutted I suspect the result will be an increase in racially discriminatory hiring practices.
