But McConnell promised this was the most important issue in the world!

A Loud GOP Minority Pledges to Make Trouble on Ukraine Military Aid

...But there is evidence to suggest that the anti-Ukraine flank of the Republican Party is playing not to the fringe but to the heart of the party’s base. A survey last month of registered voters by Kristen Soltis Anderson’s Echelon Insights found that 52% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents do not think U.S. interests are at stake in Ukraine. Similarly, a survey in March conducted by Axios/Ipsos found that 57% of Republicans opposed providing weapons and financial support to Ukraine.

“It’s insane that so few Republican members are willing to say what I’m willing to say,” Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio and a vocal opponent of aid to Ukraine, said in a recent interview. “Clearly, something is broken down about the democratic opinion-making process.”

He added, “I’d love to hear McCarthy be more skeptical of aiding Ukraine, because I think that’s where most of his voters are.”

Hmm so it's not a small minority, it's a majority of Republicans.

This is about to become important.

FALLOUT: U.S. won’t block Europe’s exports of F-16s to Kyiv.

“Washington’s decision not to block allies from sending F-16s to Ukraine comes after Zelensky’s repeated requests for fighter jets, including from the Netherlands, which has the aircraft. In February, Ukrainian officials said they had made significant progress in persuading Dutch officials to send F-16s, but Washington’s approval is necessary because of third-party transfer agreements associated with the purchase of the U.S.-made jets. The transfer would also require the sign-off of the chairs and ranking minority-party members of relevant U.S. congressional committees.”

It's no surprise, those "Republicans" who oppose military aid to Ukraine have listened to Tucker too much. RW propaganda is a strong force....

Ukraine needs artillery, and lots of it. Not F-16s. I think Zelenskyy has seen Top Gun one too many times.

They're just following Trump's lead. The guy who refused to acknowledge Putin is a war criminal at his farcical town hall event.

Truly scary. Republicans might be fine with disinformation while it benefits them politically. But this kind of things shows that the predominance of radicals has consequences that go beyond political elections. And that is clearly what is broken in the MAGA-dominated GOP.

And surface to air missiles. It might be good to provide them with a small air force on-going but that wouldn't be a priority now. This is just my opinion.

The thing is, Ukraine actually had a pretty good air defense system to start off the war. They kept the Russian Air Force largely out of the war at the beginning. Of course it's being degraded as time goes on so you're right, they do need to boost up their SAM's. But I think to make the most progress on the battlefield they need artillery.

Are you really opposed to providing any weapons and financial support to Ukraine?

People… our interests are very much so at stake with this war. Russian expansion is bad for the US period.

At this point yes. Of course, getting behind the weeds of this is that I don't think there is any way that Ukraine can win, no matter what we supply them. So what we're really doing is prolonging the war and the body count. Of course, that is current US policy, to extend the war to degrade Russia's capabilities over time.

I'm supportive of some sort of lend lease program (which the Biden administration has also recently signed on to) but keeping the war going by throwing billions in free equipment is simply going to result in higher piles of bodies and the end result is probably going to end up in the same place regardless.

There was a $3 billion accounting error in Ukraine's favor, so we at least need to pay more attention.

Meh, a billion dollars here a billion dollars there what's the difference? A billion is only a million million. The government could have given three million Americans, about 10% of the population, a million dollars. Or better yet just let the taxpayers keep their money. Anyway it's going to the urkrainian oligarchy to spend on guns and bullets and rockets and jacuzzis and yachts and maybe a jet ski.

52% of the Tucker/Trump/Viktor Orban wing of the GOP says that 52% are not in support of Ukraine. Okay. So, you basically reflected a poll that is echoing that wing but not enough to overturn the current strategy between Establishment Republicans and Democrats. But then again, you are looking at a wing of the GOP that wants a more authoritarian government friendly to Putin and other totalitarian.
