All Squirrels must DIE

Mikezila Yes , they are picky about what they eat , or at least those in my area are ,,, I can't speak about the others..

I've never seen a grey squirrell eat carrion ( dead & rotten meat ) I just never have witnessed that or heard of anyone that has .. . I have seen them gang up on a snake and make it's life really rough , but never have seen them eat a snake , or any other meat other than grasshoppers & such insects.

Now , it may be that other species of squirrells does eat meat as a regular staple of their diet , and thank you for that excellent post concerning the diet of squirrell worldwide ... it was a good post.

 

Squirrels are tough little bastards. I saw one the other day in the woods, and he leaped to a small dead branch, the branch broke and this squirrel fell what must have been over 30 feet out of an oak tree and hit the ground so hard it bounced him back in the air. I couldn't believe the "thud" it made. He just got up and ran off.

A hammer??? Are you kidding? For one thing, how are you gonna get (even in a trap) one to be still while you hammer it?
How brutally painful and the animal will suffer. It makes me wince.

A .22 with a scope, please. A clean shot to the head is the least painful because it's so sudden. No suffering.

And btw, I've been hunting for over 20 years and I NEVER take pot shots at animals. AND I've never had one get away wounded either.

I killed a moccasin in the yard with my magnum last week. One shot to the head. Done.

 

How exactly is a bullet more humane than a quick blow to the back of the head??

Insert gloved hand, remove squirrel, hold squirrel on ground, raise hammer, drop hammer. Dead. Much much kinder than immersing the trap in water... What have pot shots to do with anything?

 

A bullet is lightning fast. They never see it coming, so they have no fear, unlike being in a trap, being held, and then being bludgeoned by a hammer.

Oh, and there's no chance you get bit through that "glove". ROFL.

Putting the animal through all the fear incumbent with your method is CRUEL.

As for potshots, I don't miss. I've never missed any animal I've shot at.
They don't get away wounded either. Not once, ever.

I would suggest inserting the gloved hand elsewhere.

 

They die either way... Bullet/Hammer either way it is dead.

The first time a cow is brought in to be milked it is terrified is it cruel to milk the cow? Shooting a cow for food is cruel. Dropping a live lobster in a pot of boiling water is cruel. Chickens are kept in battery farms have a horrible life that is cruel. Being killed and eaten by a pine martin is cruel.

A leather glove??? It is slim and none.

Yes we are a cruel society are we not. So I gather that you won't eat cow, chicken or lobster then.

 

Re read what I have posted. I'm not the person complaining about the treatment of squirrels or cruelty to animals.

It is cruel but I like beef and I'm drinking milk right now.

Perhaps you could make yourself useful and come over and "take care" of the American greys. It's not right to discriminate on grounds of colour, but they say an exception exists for squirrels.

It is. They used it for the kids road safety campaign. I was a member of the Tufty Club. It's just not right to eat Tufties.

You trap it, put a bag over the door and it goes inside the bag. Then you stoat it a good one. Not that I advocate squirrel murder.

Everything is guns with USers. Use a rock and be kind to the environment.

 

Aw, shucks, Viv, shooting a squirrel isn't harming the environment....bashing one with a rock seems like a lot of suffering for the critter. I'd never do that.

 

They are rodents: like mice and rats, only a little bit cuter. But rodents all the same. I'm not going to miss a few of them, which is just how I feel about this pigeon problem at my house.

My God - the pigeon feathers and sh*t all over my sidewalk is disgusting!

 

We don't have pigeons here, but if we did, we'd STILL have no pigeons here. ROFL

Ah impersonal killing. Killing from a distance. Is it an inclination to avoid getting your hands dirty? Killing like in the movies, where you don't get up close to the animal or see its suffering. You just point something at it and it dies, you are not responsible and don't face the reality of what you are doing?

If you're killing a living thing, does it not deserve to see your face?

I worked in an historic building which was a "Listed Building", protected in law because of its age. They installed a pigeon deterrent to prevent them nesting on the ledges, in the form of a wire. Within days, the pigeons developed ability to sit on it and used the wire as a perch.

These little kittens (baby squirrels are called kittens, if you didn't know it) ...fell out of a tree during the recent storms. They are safe in a rescue centre. Who could possibly think of killing or eating a squirrel?

While I may have glammed the representation of it up a bit, Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish, is it not? I know you were not dogging Americans, I'm just saying squirrel is not bad, considering traditional Scottish food.

 

My sister and her husband use a Hav-a-heart live trap. The trapped squirrels are taken into town when her husband goes to work and released at a church with a huge property.

But, no, you can't drive them off. If you kill them, or trap them, more move in. If your house has wooden siding they can go through that in nothing flat. And, they bread constantly.

So, it's a constant battle but since we don't have actual rodents voting yet they're not protected...yet.

 

Get an air-rifle and shoot them from a window. Bait them onto a spot on the ground where you can shoot.
That'll do it.
