Americans Must Resign Themselves to Crazy Gunster Massacres

An April 2017 Pew Research Center Poll found that 77 percent of Republicans favored background checks for private sales and at gun shows, and 54 percent favored banning assault-style weapons.

Solid majorities of both gun owners and non-owners favor limiting access to guns for people with mental illnesses and individuals who are on the federal no-fly or watch lists (82% or higher favor among each group). In addition, strong majorities favor background checks for private sales and at gun shows (77% among gun owners and 87% among non-owners).​

Forget it! The zealots will again thwart the democratic will of Americans.

Despite the horrific level of gun carnage in the United States, progress is still not in the offing. Politicians, beholden to the National Rifle Association, will hide until the public grieving and outrage abates, whilst the fanatically firearm-dependent will again rave inanely against the sensible measures that Americans overwhelmingly support.

America's politicians will deploy their awesome firepower of "our thoughts and prayers" to confront the slaughter.

Senator John Thune, who I have always had great respect for and hoped would be John McCain's running mate in 2008, made a fatal mistake (IMO) yesterday when he said this to an NBC reporter:

“I think people are going to have to take steps in their own lives to take precautions to protect themselves. And in situations like that, you know, try to stay safe. As somebody said — get small.”

In other words, get used to the mass killings, and when you go outside, just keep ducking.

Very, very depressing. Even my husband, who is a big gun guy, was shocked by that comment.

No need; you and your family are much more likely to be hit by lightning or win a huge lottery jackpot.

Unless you choose to live in fear - if this brings you some joy - you needn't.

 

To be quite frank, our country is held hostage by such violent extremists on both sides, I increasingly find myself not caring what happens to a lot of Americans across the spectrum. If it isn't my family, friends, or community, whatever.

 

I will take the liberal tact and just rename a gun as a marshmallow. There, now everything is OK.

They shut down protests from Black Americans by claiming they are disrespectful to soldiers when black NFL athletes kneel, instead of standing for the National Anthem.

They shut down calls for gun control by claiming this is not the right time to talk about it because it's disrespectful to grieving victims and family members.

Everything about our society today is set up to resist change.

Or more to the point, conservatives have figured out how to push the right set of buttons to keep their people in a state of incurious inaction.

Again, why should I have to buy into a lotto on my life every time I go out the door just to make your creepy hobby easier.

And in fact, it's not even that, most of the laws people want wouldn't limit legitimate gun ownership at all. All this death is so we won't reduce the profits of the gun companies.

It is time to pass a law criminalizing mass shootings. That'd solve it. Anything outlawed can't happen - or at least that is what the anti-gunner claim.

In the USA and many locations across the world, anti-gun laws dramatically increase murder rates. But we already know that most anti-gunners don't care about murder or they'd care about Chicago.

In my opinion, cowardice is at the core of the opinion of many (not all) anti-gunners. They would never, ever act to defend anyone else and want it outlawed for anyone else to be able to do so to hide that cowardice and apathy. As one anti-gun wrote above, they don't care about people, only himself and his own.

I am no longer sure that the NRA is our big problem, because I am not sure how much discretion legislative bodies still have on second amendment issues. Once SCOTUS decided that the protection is attached to the citizen, rather than the states or a 'militia', we created a very different problem than prior.

 

Islamic extremists actually tried to claim the latest angry White guy doing his thing. They should adopt the Mormon presumptuousness in converting folks after they're dead.
