Taking the conversation beyond just body art...I suppose when character and
drive goes by the wayside..the only thing left to make a person appear more
interesting is ink under the skin.

Aside from my Dad, my boyhood role model was Neil Armstrong.
A naval aviator, seeing combat during the Korean War....a test pilot...chosen to become an astronaut and was the first human being to set foot on terrain beyond Earth.

No tattoos or body piercings...Armstrong set himself apart by deeds...not body art
    or other superficial pretensions.

Honestly, I have sympathy for the younger generations...
they have no significant role models outside of sports figures or entertainers.

The age of truly outstanding individuals...is dead....
we live in an age of outstanding mediocrity..where suicide before 30 is romanticized..
rehab becomes a badge of honor; over-paid athletes bed whatever crosses their
path leaving bastard children in every visiting city; sex scandals are the norm.

Sure of course there are exceptions...but they are certainly not the rule.
The rule is a long list of disappointments...the Tiger Woods, Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobains' of the World...

Welcome to the age of mediocrity, where dysfunction is something to strive for...

The tattoo is a fitting symbol.

Well put.But I fear that like - Jersey Shore - we have entered some sort of
Ring in Dante's inferno concerning Society. That Individuals may well be
seen outstanding, based solely on things like tattoo's and outrageous
    behavior.It's now a Carnival Society.

Jersey Shore is a good example of what is revered...or at least paid attention too...
completely vapid of any real substance.

Um... Jersey Shore is not representative of anything but self-absorbed Jerseyites. I have a tattoo, and I spent four years living in Jersey. Trust me: they represent no one but their shallow selves.

Reality shows are modern-day freak shows. If you're in a reality show, you by definition are *not* representative of the mainstream.

I know that Jersey Shore is still regularly watched by millions...

"Snooki" is a household name for crissakes...what exactly is on her curriculum vitae?
The ability to dance pantiless, drink and cuss like a sailor?
Truly admirable qualities *sarcasm*; yet millions tune in to the escapades.

My rant wasn't directed specifically at inked individuals by the way..just it seems to be a
quick fix to gain an identity.

Obviously to generalize any statement would be falling into the trap of a fallacious argument.

A plethora of non-inked individuals have fallen into the mire of dysfunction.

Spoken like a true Lefty. You haven't a clue as to what yer yapping about.
Jersey Shore is now not just a hit,but revered.Obama even mentioned
" Snooky " about a year ago. They are on all the major networks
getting interviews and even at the recent MTV Video awards.
They are seen as a cultural phenomena.Based on nothing but visceral
base mentality appeal. The appeal of outrageous behavior, getting
drunk, getting into fights and gossiping the day long.
It's proof positive as to what value Society puts on behavior.
We are have entered Dante's Inferno and circles of dispicableness.
    Wise Up ... Wake Up.

Is she held in high esteem and regard? No. She's simply lead freak of that particular freak show.

"Dexter" is a TV series about a serial killer. Does that mean we revere serial killers?

"Breaking Bad" is a TV series about a high school chemistry teacher who turns to making and dealing meth. Does that mean we put meth dealers on a pedestal?

We go to freak shows to see freaks, not because we want to be like them.

Snooky is held in far more regard and respect than any of Bush's
cabinet where.Like Dick Cheney or Condi Rice.it's a Liberal
network thing. To offer nothing but gotcha question to those like a
Dick Cheney or a Condi Rice but actually fall all over the likes
of a Snooky as if adorable like - The View - has.

Snookie...... no, Jersey Shore, is what can be considered dark and evil in the country. No one that ignorant should be revered by any sensible person.

We should be glorifying Stephen Hawking, not someone who goes around sticking marshmallows to wall (making millions of dollars in the process) because its funny.

I used to watch that (*)(*)(*)(*) with my ex-girlfriend, my god, the wasted time and dead braincells as a result. Jersey Shore is just one of many mindless TV programs that are leading to the degradation and intellectual death in this country.

It's not even entertaining.I mean like the Three Stooges was really entertaining.
No 2 shorts ever the same.
All one gets with Shore is the same braindead example of sloth and
drinking binges.Little muscled or made up Greaseballs acting as if human
hamsters w/o the cage.Or the wheel.

You have been given an explanation, you just keep ignoring it because it doesn't fit with your thoghts on them. Your a close minded fool. People who like something different than you must have something wrong with them right?

Yeah, it is not something that he is proud of, but he takes great pride in getting out and doing what he has with his life.

So you know one guy who owns a tattoo shop and that is where you get all this nonsense from?

    It all makes sense now.

    Why not?

We should revert back to that old saying one thing and doing another. Religious exclusion, no divorce, no financial independence for women and race and class oppression. (yet more than half the people on this forum would decry misogynism etc as perceived in other cultures). That class system one is a good for building character. Keep your head below the parapet and take what you get, you'll be rewarded when you're dead. Yes, right.

Society evolves. In the pre-feminism era and with all that macho (*)(*)(*)(*) society was different, not necessarily any better, when "boys" were reading Commando comics and wanting to be spacemen.

Tattoos are reserved for people who simply have no personality.

Anyone I've ever known with a tat has been socially and/or emotionally handicapped and generally slower.

Just because you don't think someone has a tat doesn't mean they don't have one.

There's a very small number of people I consider worth anything at all. I know them intimately enough to know they don't have any.

    pics or it didn't happen.

So does having fake teeth mean that you have artificial intelligence or is it a sign of intelligent design?

I'll never get a tattoo because I think they are a complete waste of money and time plus I imagine I'd want to change it a week after getting it.

I always thought if you were going to get a tattoo it should be for a very personal reason, like my cousin wants to get a tattoo of his daughter's feet (she passed away at birth). My best friend is slowly becoming covered in tattoos, some are personal and have meaning and others I think are just ugly and pointless. There are very few tats that I actually have seen that are tasteful or well done and look good on the person in my opinion. I like seeing very colorful tattoos and seeing the person who has them with just as colorful clothing, it seems to flow really well when the type of tattoo matches what the person regularly wears.

Like this model who has very bright sleeve tattoos which I find tasteful because she only has sleeves and is not literally covered in tattoos all over in random places. She also wears very bright clothing to fit the style of her body art.

This woman here has a beautifully drawn piece of art on her back one of the few I have seen that is really well done.

I believe I will get this on my arm in the next couple months.
