As things stand now, House Republicans will cause the United States to default on its debts

House Republicans simply are not very bright.

"President Trump famously declared during his 2016 campaign that he loved the “poorly educated” because voters with lower levels of schooling delivered an overwhelming share of votes to him," the conservative Washington Times.

On the other hand, they are speaking to their base. So, they can probably get away with it within the Republican Party. They do not seem interested in wooing the general audience for the purpose of subsequent general elections.

As things stand now, House Republicans are bent on causing the United States to default on its obligations to the American people, including Social Security and Medicare

Raising the debt limit will allow the U.S. to pay current debts. Future spending is an entirely different ballgame. Each new spending proposal requires a separate bill, separate negotiations between lawmakers, and a separate vote, often requiring 60 votes to approve closure.

House Republicans want to include future spending in their legislative action to approve an increase in the debt limit.

They face two major problems. They still have not offered which programs they intend to cut. Any bill the House approves along these lines is dead on arrival in the Senate.

NBC reports, "Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced Monday that House Republicans will vote on their own debt ceiling bill to empower the U.S. to meet its obligations until 2024."

Since the president continues to hide, House Republicans will take action. So here’s our plan: In the coming weeks the House will vote on a bill to lift the debt ceiling into the next year, save taxpayers trillions of dollars, make us less dependent upon China, curb our high inflation,' McCarthy said.

With respect to McCarthy's crack about the President, he was being disingenuous. President Biden has refused to negotiate with McCarthy because the Speaker has nothing to negotiate. McCarthy has not offered any specifics on what he is proposing.

NBC continued, "McCarthy offered few specifics."

Then McCarthy offered some politics-speak on what his proposals will do once House Republicans can agree on what they are.

“Let me be clear. A no-strings-attached debt limit increase will not pass,” McCarthy said, adding of the [non-existent] forthcoming GOP plan: “It limits, it saves and it grows.”

and Biden/Dems want to destroy the economy so that they can blame the Republicans

It is all about 24 - both sides see this as a way to win the election. They are all rich - they'll be fine - none of them really care about the lower/middle class

Meanwhile the sheep on both sides will believe the BS their party spews

“Without exaggeration, American debt is a ticking time bomb that will detonate unless we take serious, responsible action. Yet, how has President Biden reacted to this issue? He has done nothing,” McCarthy said.

    That is a lie!

Raising the debt limit allows the United States to pay current obligations. The reverse is bankruptcy.

Obviously, Republican Speaker McCarthy cannot be trusted. He just lied to the American people.

McCarthy is full of crap because the GOP said nothing while Trump was President

However, the core problem remains that we need to drastically reduce spending to get to a point asap where the debt does start going down. Dems have been spending like drunken sailors for 2+ years and it would have been worse if not for Manchin

How much of that debt is caused directly by giving how many billions now to Ukraine?

what we need to do is reduce corporate greed, stop the excessive foreign outsourcing and excessive foreign imports

Trump raised the debt more in 4 years than any other President in History, Trump raised the debt in 4 years almost as much as Obama did in 8

raise the min wage, collect more taxes

go back to the tax rates under Reagan for the rich, collect more taxes

I'm just curious if you're going to hold all politicians to the same standard?

Our current president promised that he would cure cancer if elected.

So what has President Biden done?

Yeah, let's just go on spending on every half-baked idea Biden or, more likely, his staff of hard left ideologues can come up with.

Obama didn't have a national emergency; he also had deficits in his first four years of more than $5.6 trillion, so your comparison is somewhat questionable.
    pure stupidity.

the fed doesn't do this during a great economy... that the economy was great pre-covid is one of the biggest lies the Republicans ever told.

There is zero to no chance the US will default on its debt.

31T debt vs 120B to Ukraine = 0.00387% to defend itself against and destabilize an enemy nation that frequently attacks our elections and engages in cyber warfare, one that disarmed its nuclear arsenal because we made assurances to them all while not costing one American troops life.

Of course you should compare the $120B to Ukraine with the deficit or the annual revenue, not the debt.

Neither side will give in as the clueless crap that we have in DC believe that crashing the economy will win them the election

So spending like thieves with stolen credit cards is the Republicans fault? Do we really need more blood, of do we just need fewer mosquitoes?

It is both parties' fault. The parties only care about it when they are not in the oval office

Absolutely! They are at each others throats until it comes time to screw the taxpayer. Then they become best friends and come up with "bipartisan solutions"!!!

Speaker McCarthy is not very bright. He set a trap for himself.

CNN explains, "Millions of Americans could face massive consequences unless Speaker Kevin McCarthy can navigate out of a debt trap he has set for President Joe Biden that is instead threatening to capture his House Republicans.

"The California Republican traveled to Wall Street on Monday to deliver a fresh warning that the House GOP majority will refuse to lift a cap on government borrowing unless Biden agrees to spending cuts that would effectively neutralize his domestic agenda and neuter his White House legacy."

Note: It appears McCarthy does not know raising the debt limit has nothing on future borrowing. Raising the debt limit allows the government to pay its current obligations like Social Security and Medicare.

"McCarthy also assured traders, however, that he would never let the US government default on its obligations – a potential disaster that could halt Social Security payments, trigger a recession and unleash job cuts by the fall in the event that the debt ceiling is not raised."

McCarthy also said yesterday, “Let me be clear. A no-strings-attached debt limit increase will not pass.”

Was he lying then or is he lying now?

Did he mean with his former statement that he would allow the debt limit to be increased without a cap on future spending? Did he undermine his own position?

McCarthy wants Biden to agree to spending cuts.

Does McCarthy know what his position is? House Republicans still have no proposal on which programs they want to cut. McCarthy is trying to negotiate with the White House while not having anything to negotiate. Biden clearly does not know what McCarthy wants.

    Neither does McCarty.
