Best home defense weapon

Eh not so good of a alarm.

Way back, when I was a teenager, I and a few buddies where breaking into homes for money and what ever else we could steal, one in particular that we targeted was a guy we knew was dealing in drugs, one of us actuality had been buying pot and coke from him and we knew those had to be cash transactions.

His alarm system was a very nasty dog, that was so nuts it wold try to bite people who stopped by his place to refill their prescriptions, of course paying cash, that problem was solved with a .22 caliber handgun that someone had and a phone book, one of the group, I don't remember who, popped the backdoor latch open, the dog was right there barking and slobbering, someone else shot the dog in the head, there was very little sound from the shot and we where in, we got a rather good haul and went back out the stepping around the small puddle of blood that came of the now silent dogs head.

 

I hate to say this but, and? What’s your point? If my argument is burglars on average don’t want a confrontation, don’t say “burglars don’t want a confrontation”.

 

Yeah. And? If I’m saying you need the right justifications for self defense, the response isn’t “well the police won’t get there in time”.

 

And without being armed you may not live long enough for the police to arrive.

 

No you claimed you can hide in a room and be safe the burglars which is BS.

I did, because it’s true. 1/10 burglaries will turn violent. Which means 9/10 burglaries won’t turn violent. Why? Because burglars don’t want to rob houses when people live there because it increases the risk of failure. You citing one case doesn’t disprove what I said. Now if you want to make a claim about that 10%, go right ahead and then we can discuss the appropriate self defense tools.

A dog is better. Much less chance of it being used in cases of domestic abuse.

The vast majority of cases show that you don’t have to worry about being a victim of a violent attack, just a burglary. Kinda under scores your whole fear mongering point.

My pick would be the shotgun.

I own a Remington 870 tactical and a S&W similar to the Glock and the 870 is the first weapon I would reach for.

PS. Keep your shotgun loaded and the safety on. Racking your slide is not a good idea.

 

As the old saying goes, when seconds count, the police will be there in minutes.

 

You would be surprised how many people fail to understand that, racking a slide if Hollywood dramatics, quietly taking off the safety with a round in the chamber is real world survival.

 

Another thing the 911'ers fail to understand is, the police are not obligated to respond to a call for help.

During a home invasion you want to maintain and exploit every tactical advantage you have over the intruder, and when you rack your slide you are needlessly handing the intruder one of those advantages by revealing your position. That's a mistake that can get you and your family killed.

 

Like you I live in the middle of nowhere - there's no way the cavalry is going to make it to the rescue.

And in urban areas where idiots are defunding their police departments and cops are leaving their departments in droves, there may be no one available to respond.

The cold hard reality is that you are on your own.

My wife who is ex-military knows this too, which is why she is skilled with firearms, possesses a CCW permit, and owns a gun (S&W 357 Magnum) that is suited especially for her, concealment and drawing out of her purse.

Quite frankly, I don't know why every woman in this country doesn't own a firearm for self-defense.

 

I went with a Glock 19 and a Benelli M4.

The Benelli was a bit spendy, but me and mine are worth it.

My neighbor is a liberal loon who hates guns.

He's called me before to come over and catch a mouse that was in his house.

If he's calls me during a break in/home invasion, I'll tell him to call Black Lives Matter, and then hang up.

 

According to the NSSF women are the fastest growing sector in firearm ownership, with the majority of them buying handguns, also at NRA Training and Education, there has been a surge of female instructors qualifying to teach firearm safety and self defense courses, this is the result of an increase in demand for female only training class's at ranges, where at one time males where the only instructors.

So much for the days of a guys, with no instructor experience, taking their GF's or wives to the range for some "gun" training, these women are seeking serious self defense training tailored to their lifestyle and it wouldn't surprise me if this is in part, the result of the calling for the de-funding of police and the pussification of too many men.

That's great news. I have to think the rise in the number of female gun owners and instructors is encouraging more women to follow suit.

I'm sure you're right. Rising crime is the #1 factor and as women are becoming more independent more of them are becoming gun owners. Good for them.

 

What stock do you have on your M4? I have the factory collapsible stock and am learning to hate it. It’s a snag-o-matic, especially with winter clothes. I’m kinda looking for other options but hear length of pull is very long on most fixed stocks for the m4.
