In his 1989 farewell address, President Ronald Reagan worried whether we were doing a good enough job teaching our own children what it means to be American. He longed for what he called an "informed patriotism."

This sentiment was echoed over 30 years later by President Trump, who in his own farewell address warned that our "loss of confidence in ourselves" was not just a worry, but our greatest danger.

"No nation can long thrive," President Trump said, "that loses faith in its own values, history and heroes – for these are the very sources of our unity and our vitality."

It’s bad enough to lose one’s faith, which at least holds forth the possibility of recovering it.

But what if we give up and abandon altogether the teaching of our children the true and inspiring story of America? What will become of our youngest Americans who are starting off with a blank slate about what our country means and stands for? What exactly are we doing if we are not teaching them about their country’s values, history and heroes?

The alarming answer is, in our nation today, there are far too many classrooms where our children and grandchildren are not learning about the positive revolution in human affairs set in motion by our Founders, or how later leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. called upon the wisdom and vision of the Founders to defeat the evil injustices of slavery and segregation.

Instead, many are learning that our Founders were altogether sinful men unworthy of statues or even praise. The historic achievements of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Douglass and King are being shelved in favor of the false and destructive narrative that we are a systemically racist and ultimately irredeemable nation.

Even worse – and at an alarming pace – students are being subjected to the radical concept known as critical race theory, which pits them against one another on the basis of race and gender under the guise of achieving "equity." Not only is this extreme ideology deeply divisive and harmful, but it rejects America’s most defining principle – that as individuals we are all created equal by God.

This is not a formula for building a more perfect Union.

A great nation cannot survive if its citizens are taught to hold their own country in contempt. Our Founders knew that people are not perfect – that is why they created an ingenious constitutional system of checks and balances. But that system also requires strong civic engagement by citizens who understand and defend the values and traditions that make America special.

Dr. Ben Carson and Gov. Kristi Noem are exactly right about the topics covered in their very lengthy article about Critical Race Theory and American education. We need to promote Americas true history in our schools, not demean the country with divisive theories that tear us apart. We need to teach our children about all of our history 1776 style and not talk only about the mistakes made. The 1619 propaganda wants to minimize everything good about our country, it’s founding, founders, and documents and pick at the failings ignoring all the efforts to overcome and make a more perfect Union.

I highly recommend this fine article about our history and the efforts of progressives to twist and pervert it. It’s great that at the state and local level 1619 project and critical race theory are being rejected.

How do fight anti-Americanism when it's indoctrinated into our children in the entire K-12 school system? You ain't woke if you're white isn't that what they teach?

But then they'd be socially disadvantaged because they won't have any social life and no senior prom. Oh, wait covid19 took all that away already. Forget I mentioned it.

Actually its quite simple. Since schools are run by your local government you could get involved. Learn what is being taught in your schools. Vote for the right candidates to run them. Since Teachers are hired by local government you could prepare yourself and apply for a job. Raise teachers pay assure a wider choice of applicants. Since your schools choose their own textbooks pressure financial pressure can be placed upon book companies. Choose books that present facts, not opinions.
You have the opportunity to do much more than complain. Good luck.

My oldest kid is 37. He is not indoctrinated at all. My youngest is 33. He is about half indoctrinated. Grandchildren are totally indoctrinated. The situation is pretty hopeless IMHO.

Pfft, teaching the whole truth about our history is un-American now? No one is claiming the country is "irredeemable." Heaven forbid we humanize the founders rather than worshipping them. No wonder so many folks of a particular lean keep making the same mistakes. They refused to learn about those same problems from the past, and now they demand their kids stay just as ignorant.

Home schools and private schools can and do have their own proms. Usually a safer event than the urban public school version.

True. In rural conservative far Northern California we have good public schools with conservative school boards and a lot of parent involvement.

Had you read the entire article you’d have noticed that the authors well covered all of that. About all the issues and mistakes and the effort to overcome them and strive toward the more perfect Union our founders envisioned for us.

How many years has the extreme right been saying schools are indoctrinating our children? Longer than I've been alive. Same old nonsense. Do you think people will believe it this time?

    Federal Curriculum
    Federal Testing
    Federal Financing

    That doesn't seem "limited"!

But, instead of that, we got Trump. He transformed the GOP from the Conservative Party, to the Personality Cult Party. Today the Republican Party now has no ideology, no goals, no purpose... other than to deify one man. And, most definitely NO patriotism.

The end-game for liberals is the complete destruction or at least hugely modified constitution. Right now they can only toss away individual rights when there’s a convenient crisis or the courts go their way. Get rid of the constitution and neither of those matter anymore

tbh it won’t take very many stepping stones at this point till they start going after it. An irredeemable racist society founded by racists. How can the Constitution, at the foundation of our foundations, not be?

everything they are doing makes sense when looked at from the standpoint of them wanting to destroy everything.

    Flood the country with foreigners
    No IDs to vote
    Destroy the police
    Take everyone’s guns
    Cancel Culture
    Joeseph Goebbels the media
    Joeseph Goebbels the education system

How funny. Another conservative proudly demonstrating how little he knows about liberals. How much conservatives are into making up things to complain about liberals over.

There's a difference between disagreeing, and teaching children to hate based on false presumptions and half assed retelling of parts of history without also teaching perspective and critical thinking.

No one worships the founding fathers. No one ever has. Even when I was in grade school we were taught that they owned slaves and weren't the best of people. That was 40 years ago. The difference between when I was in grade school and today is that we were taught perspective and critical thinking.

It's not the federal government mandating much of what is currently being taught. The Federal government gives a general guideline. The States decide what is actually in the curriculum. Localities refine that further.
