In fact, rather humorously when I was in Alabama about 2 decades ago my hair was just as long. Which resulted in one of my funniest police encounters. True story, got pulled over for a tail light, and the cop pulled me out and said almost immediately "I smell weed". I actually laughed, and said he had one hell of a nose as I had not touched pot since 1981. And within minutes I was in the back of his cruiser in handcuffs and he was calling for a police dog to search my car. Convinced he had a "California Hippie" drug runner.

Thankfully his Sergeant as soon as he heard my name, the description of my car, and where I was pulled over (right in front of where I work) called and cancelled the drug dog and came himself. The computer store I worked at was a popular hangout for the local cops, and I knew half of the department on a first name basis. And they knew not only was I about as anti-drug as you can get, I was in the process of joining the Army. And that even though my other vehicle was a crotch rocket, I always obeyed all traffic laws. He apologized to me, and the Sergeant later gave him a real reaming out for profiling people without a reason. Just because somebody is a long-hair from California does not make them a hippie. Or mean that they use drugs.

And as an FYI, I grow my hair long for the exact same reason now as I did then. I grow it out for approximately 3 years, then have it all cut off until I am almost bald so I can donate it to Locks of Love. A non-profit organization that uses donated hair to make wigs for children undergoing chemotherapy.

One thing that a lot of people know, is that "figures lie". And by using misleading things like "per capita", they can twist reality however they want.

Want to know the state with the most murders?

California.

You don't get much more "Blue" than California.

Second is Texas, and half of those murders are in "Blue" cities of Houston and Dallas.

Third, Illinois. And if you look down the list, by far the murders are not actually spread among states, but major cities.

Georgia is often seen as "Red", but the Atlanta metro area where most of the crimes happen is deep Blue.

And remove those violent Democratic run cities, in reality the crime rates in those states plummets dramatically.

But are republican run large cities safer? The reality is that urbanization correlates with both crime and being liberal. But it’s spurious, liberal and crime share a common cause rather than causing each other.

Basically, when you control for known variables associated with homicide, the apparent effect of politics disappears on both sides (3% wasn’t statistically significant).

 

Which means absolutely nothing. In California, it has long been common for Democrats to register as Republican in order to game the primary system. That is one reason why for years the Republicans ended up with candidates for Governor that not even they wanted. Absolute nobodies that generally had the personality of a sponge and nobody had ever heard of. Guys that were rating in the bottom third of candidates, yet somehow won in the primary.

Great example was in 2002, when they ended up with Bill Simon. Which had everybody going "Who?", as he was competing against well known politicians like Richard Riordan. And had no political background at all, and had only moved to the state a couple of years earlier from New York.

His electoral enrollment may not have been accurately reported and may not be relevant no matter what it is, but disengenous claims like this are part of the problem with America. People just make up their own realities and retreat into them to avoid reality.
