I think this is the most likely scenario. The incompetence theory is very unlikely and if the powers that be had really wanted to kill Trump, they would have given him a heart attack somehow. He's old enough for that to be believable.

The main flaw in the fake-ear-wound theory is the fact that there was a guy on the roof attempting to shoot in the direction of Trump. I think most people have heard about the theory that certain people can be programmed with drugs and sleep deprivation to commit crimes.

I don't rule out the possibility that Crooks was under such control. A rational person not under such control would know that he would be caught later and his life would be ruined. The idea that the mind of someone in a heavy depression could be affected by certain drugs to get him to just obey instructions sounds plausible to me. Someone in that state probably couldn't aim very well so his gun was probably made non-functional and other operatives did the shooting which hit the hydraulic hose on the crane, etc. That all sounds plausible to me.

Modern software, AI etc. make video editing and fakery really simple. So, significant time after an event, some guy claims to have captured new footage, not seen before.

What are the chances he is pointing straight at a gunman and only just "discovered" it?

Viral videos can make people rich, my immediate thought is deception, with that in mind.
