California bill would ban orca shows at SeaWorld

There are only two types of people out there: people and corporations. Whales are not people. Whales were put on earth for our amusement. It started with gay rights. Now it's moving on to whale rights. What's next?

Seaworld is a corporation. It has rights: namely property rights. Especially over the animals it captured legally.

I tend to agree with the proposed ban.

You are taking an intelligent animal, one that roams wild over thousands of miles of ocean, living in packs of other animals in family groups, and putting them in a swimming pool to jump through hoops for the amusement of people.

Now, as a hunter, I love the outdoors, and I love the creatures in it. I fin these sorts of zoos not only distasteful, but cruel.

No different than training dogs or cats and putting them in shows, or training horses for riding, etc as far as I can tell. For that matter you could argue that breeding domesticated pets which can't survive in the wild (just for people's entertainment" is just as cruel

If it's established that this is cruel then it needs to apply evenly across the board to all species - not just to animals which are deemed "cute" or "endangered". That's really just a form of "species supremacy" - no different than white supremacy or racism, since it deems animals "worth" based on how "rare" or "cute".

It's really no different than a 19th century plantation owner decrying foul treatment of "whites", but who supports the slavery of "negroes".

Other than a devout vegan, I find the majority of people who express exaggerated outrage on issues like this to be hypocrites. I always get a laugh of someone decrying the "inhumane treatment" of a whale or a rhino, but munching on the remains of an innocent cow which was ground up just because they chose their greasy fast food addiction over a healthier vegetarian diet- It's basically just a substitute for a religion for a lot of these nutters.

I agree with this bill they are mammals they should not be treated this way. After watching blackfin and watching the mother cry after they took her baby away was enough for me. Just let the ones that can survive go and the ones that cant a big pool and all the food they can eat and put it on SeaWorlds tab.

    I disagree.

Cats and dogs have been bred for thousands of years to be pets, to live alongside of people, and a chihuahua hardly resembles the wolf from which it descended.

Killer whales have not. One is a wild animal. One is a pet.

it's not even a zoo. zoos have habitats, these marine mammal theaters have barren tanks.

that's what you'd be doing to an orca or dolphin. those tanks don't have anything else in them.

marine mammals were here before man, dogs were created BY man. they should have a little more consideration.

These whales could have entire oceans to swim in. Instead they get a tub and they are forced to perform. There's nothing natural about that. What's natural is for them to attack trainers, which is what they do... because they're huge predators, not circus performers.

    Gay whale rights.

I don't understand what the difference is - whether it's a whale or a dog I don't see how teaching it to do tricks is "cruel", unless it's equally cruel among all species

Is it just me, or is this Title semi-erotic?

Freeing All Willies might mean something TOTALLY different than what was meant ... lol

So if they just "bred them" over the years to be domesticated as opposed to "wild", like have been done with dogs, then it'd be different?

I believe I noted the differences. One has been bred for thousands of years for coexistence with man and one is a wild animal.

I guess in this post-liberal, post-civil rights, post-democratic society, some people are to have rights to be amused, while others have rights to be the amusers, in this era of big think-tanks. How amusing, but not entirely appropriate.
