I don't see where he is wrong or who he is demeaning and he seems to be villified for just bringing it up. Discuss.

I think he was contrasting the vilification the woman received who called herself Black from the left and the vilification trans people receive from the right.
They say Black identity can't be conveniently assumed and they think he is saying that is what is happening with trans people. Not at all, although choosing to identify as a different race and identifying as the opposite sex are not considered equally valid by society.
You don't often have a case where a woman grew up white then identified as African American. She was outed, called a liar, manipulator and loony. Her identifying as Black was not taken seriously. Maybe she was serious, but she can't do that. It's against the rules.
Mixed race people choose to identify with a single race all the time and society accepts that choice as valid. Obama coming from a white family with white friends in Hawaii got blacker after he moved to Chicago.
