Why More White Americans Are Opposing Government Welfare Programs

A new study shows that since 2008, more white people in the United States oppose welfare programs, in part because of increasing "racial resentment."

One of the reasons for this opposition, according to the report, is white Americans' perceptions that they might be losing their financial and social status while people of color make gains in those areas.

These researchers — Robb Willer, a professor of sociology at Stanford University, and Rachel Wetts, a doctoral candidate in sociology at the University of California, Berkeley — have conducted other studies that linked racial bias and the Tea Party movement.

While conducting this recent study about opposition to welfare, Willer and Wetts showed the respondents graphs they had fabricated. The fictional data demonstrated white Americans becoming a minority or showed the income of white Americans decreasing as the incomes of people of color increased.

The researchers wanted to understand how the behavior of white Americans shifted when they perceived different things — even if untrue — about how certain racial groups were faring.

"We find evidence that welfare backlash among white Americans is driven in part by feelings that the status of whites in America is under threat," Wetts told NPR.

Despite those perceptions, other research has found that white people are the biggest beneficiaries of the government safety net. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, white people made up the the largest share — at 52 percent — of people lifted from poverty by safety-net programs, while black people made up less than a quarter of that share. When it comes to receiving Medicaid, white people make up about 43 percent of recipients, Hispanics about 30 percent, African-Americans 18 percent, with 9 percent identified as other, according to Wetts.

We are living in a divided country, where one half is living in reality, and the other in arrested development along the racial spectrum, except their own biases make them blind to their own reality. It's easier to blame others than to blame themselves.

When Trump falls, and he will, how will we repair the damage he has left behind by exploiting this segment of White America?

Yeah, I think people are waking up to the fact that welfare is just eugenics. While that broad can have 15 kids and demand to know who is going to pay for them all, the people paying are wishing that they could have three kids.

How about we blame liberals for trying to turn America into a third world shithole? White children now constitute less than 50% of all children born in America, but white people still don't want to see America turned into a white minority country. We're living in a divided country, all right, one half that wants to see America remain white and one that wants to see it turned into Mexico but thinks that won't impact America's wealth and power.

 

Just out of curiosity, are there any nations with a white minority population?

Maybe South Africa now but any real ones?

You are aware of the fact that more than half those on welfare are caucasian right? That warehousing the poor doesn't truly help them?

 

That describes most of Latin America until you get to Patagonia which which are majority white countries.

Interesting study. I don't know if buy it or not, particularly if the researchers have linked the Tea Party to "racial bias." That's absurd on it's face. But I don't understand, if you do buy it, how you came to the conclusion you did that "Trump falls..." If, White American feelings towards the welfare state are contingent on their perceived "status," Then doesn't it follow that as the proportion of Whites in the US declines won't this perception increase? Won't whites become more and more radicalized as they become a smaller percentage of the population? If I understand this study's conclusions correctly, whites should become more and more radicalized. Demography is destiny after all.
