A Los Angeles County resident is believed to be the first juvenile to have died from the novel coronavirus in the United States.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told CNN the person was a teenager.
Garcetti says this fatality shows that the virus can affect young people, not just people with preexisting conditions.
"It still involves people dying," he said. "There is a chance it will be you and if even if it isn't it will kill someone you love."
The teen lived in Lancaster, California, according to county officials. Health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said it is unclear how the person contracted Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.

So much for "it's only old people dying from the Virus".

    Now we have teens dying.

The younger generation really needs to take the Virus threat seriously.

Everybody (regardless of age) needs to stay vigilant.

    Thoughts?

Did the teen have underlying health issues?

About 20% of all Corona hospitalizations in the US are people between the ages of 20 and 40.

How many of those are at serious risk as opposed to doctors providing extreme cautionary measures? The deaths have continued to follow the same path globally, the elderly and those with underlying conditions.

The fact the articles about this one case fail to mention underlying conditions makes it seem like sensationalism...

Deaths don't tell the whole story. Many of the sick people who are not geriatric still can be extremely sick and need care and support for weeks.

Thats where we get places like Italy where ventilators are being removed from patients over 60 yo to give to younger patients.

The death rates will increase as the hospitals, personnel and doctors get sick or give up because we don't supply supplies. Here in the USA nurses end up using the same mask for a whole shift of dozens of patients in ICUs and regular beds.

People are dying already while Trump doesn't bother - he wants to have us all go back to work with little support to survive!

That's where you are wrong. End of the day there is only one metric, deaths. Sad as that is, it's the one thing that will determine success or failure. You folks need to stack bodies like cordwood, Trump needs to keep that number down and restart the economy. We all know the left is betting big on body count...

The op is about a death, not a hospitalization. People are just focusing on hospitalizations over deaths in order to scare the youth into taking this seriously

Being extremely sick in the hospital for 2 or 3 weeks may not scare youth (until they are that sick for that long - they probably will consider that for quite a long timel!) but the overwhelmed hospitals and supplies and bills are scaring the hell of administration and anyone who cares about society!

When your hospitals are overwhelmed you will see a massive increase in the deaths of young.

We, (UK) had our first case of young death yesterday - a 21 year old apparently with no underlying disease.

However other people are dying who might have been saved. A 36 year old woman died in London a day after her husband called for an ambulance who told him she did not fit the criteria to go to hospital.

Yes, this was obviously one of those hard to forgive mistakes. Unfortunately as far as getting a test and so knowing you have the virus and so getting care the US still lags behind most of the world.

I am also hearing of more and more younger people without underlying illnesses dying. Certainly it is still by far the old with underlying issues but the young are most certainly not risk free and that will become more true as health systems become overwhelmed and there is not enough for everyone - London is expecting this by the weekend. That being said they have built a makeshift 4,000 bed hospital. Lets hope they have the needed supplies and people to man it.

Young healthy people die from many different respiratory viruses regularly, every year.

If we published a daily body count for influenza the people would have been horrified months ago.
There are more in the US this flu season than globally for Covid, since November

As we have 360 million residents not 55 million like the UK.

Flu isn't taking our healthcare system to it's knees like COVID is.

Our doctors and nurses on the front lines are dying from exposure. Our healthcare capacity is being severely limited.

They live in the same freakin place as their patients, the community. How do you know where they contracted the disease?

I wonder if the teen had pre-existing respiratory and/or circulatory problems or an imunodeficiency. Wouldnt make it less tragic, of course, but we already know that those decrease the survival chances in everyone, not just the elderly (and often are part of the reason the elderly are at higher risk).

Anyone who thought young people can't die from Cvirus has (obviously) been misinformed. It still, however, appears to be true that young people in general are at far less risk of death from it. As well as those without other pre-existing conditions, malnutrition or immunodeficiency.

??? Healthcare workers exposed to COVID every day are contracting this disease at a greater rate than their community.

Plus, they are taking far greater care at home than the average citizen today - because they aren't stupid, don't listen to Rusbo or Hannity, etc.

That is part of the problem!

We have only tested a very small part of the community.

10 days ago, the usa had done a little over 300 tests per million people.

The UK had tested just under 1,000 of per million people.

The "crappy health care" of England is accomplishing more than "supposedly good healthcare" of the USA, while the USA spends TWICE as much money person!

    A fail by any name....

I wasn't comparing you to the UK. We are all in this together but if you like comparisons, differences between the US, the richest country in the world and other countries, lets say South Korea come from choices on policy

That Guardian article must be citing the UK's response to Corona.

The same month China told the WHO about the virus Trump bans travel to and from China. The WHO declared Corona a pandemic on March 11th, but Trump had restricted travel to China some 6 weeks before that. Trump acted even before the WHO called Corona a Pandemic. So spare me the pusillanimous US bashing.
