I have mixed emotions. While I realize the tenure system has been misused and abused, and somehow must stop, there is also good rationale for the tenure system in general. It is to disallow the administration, board of trustees, and the government for dictating professorial thought. The problem is the current tenure system does exactly that.

 

When one shows you the proof that it must be so, virtually by definition and you deny the logic of the statement what else is left?

 

You’ve provide no such proof. Show me the evidence that kids have been indoctrinated by all these teachers? Show me that this scheme by all these lib teachers to brainwash kids has worked.

Nobody is being silenced. These professors can say what they want, but they don't get to hide behind tenure from the fallout of that speech.

Tenure is stupid and makes no sense.

The worst professors I had in college were all tenured.

 

It's not firing people for not aligning (though ironically you said nothing about this in defense of conservatives), it's being accountable to your employer for your actions and speech.

 

And the best professors I had were tenured. If you understand the academic process, the only reason people go through the doctorate program, the low pay, and low job security is for tenure. That's kinda it. It's a job. Removing tenure because people have political differences than the government is basically silencing them and taking away a key right that hurts universities. Mark my words, you will see a massive exodus of professors leaving the state, hurting the state's economy for decades to come.

 

Yeah it's firing professors for their academic freedom of speech. You are aware professors like teachers... are in charge of running a classroom? But unlike teachers (which they should have academic freedom of speech), professors are allowed more freedom in what they say and do. When I was teaching I would freely tell my students my own biases on different theories and beliefs. Because I want them to engage with the ideas and help them spot the weaknesses in different arguments.

 

Aww. A tear. A bunch of people that never spent a day in the real world teaching students to prepare for the real world while hiding behind a shield known as tenure.

I'm an adjunct professor and can say without a doubt, most of the professors are teaching because they couldn't cut it or wanted the easy path.

Do you honestly think teaching is an easy path? This just says more about you and your ability to teach the material than anything else. Look, I was a TA. And I have seen awful professors and worked for awful professors. But they're not bad at their jobs because they're incompetent. They're smart people.

 

You don't trust people with being able to form political opinions and engage with others? No wonder why the right is flirting with authoritarianism.
