Cardinal George Pell, former Vatican finances chief and Australia's top-ranking Catholic, dies in Rome after hip surgery, aged 81

what a relief for the Pope. Two major sources of worry gone.

I pushed back on people mocking Bin Laden's death, I'd be a hypocrite to not do the same with Pell.

When bad people die I tend to mourn the person they could have been. Bin Laden for instance was a very smart person could probably could have done a lot of good in his region if he hadn't gone down the path he did.

Was Pell bad? I don't know, I haven't followed his story. I heard his guilty verdict was overturned and never reaffirmed, so that would suggest not, but I haven't followed it myself. Care to fill me in?

if he was guilty, at least he got a years punishment, we will probably never know what happen, or if the jury got it right

Why did his appeal succeed this time?
The cardinal argued that the jury, and previous appeal judges, had relied too heavily on the "compelling" evidence of the alleged victim.

The cleric's lawyers didn't seek to discredit that testimony, but rather argued that the jury had not properly considered other evidence.

What we do know is a judge can simply override a jury conviction and prevent retrial - if you've got enough money
