“The U.S. economy is at last moving into the recovery stage from the coronavirus, at least in most states.

One definite pattern has emerged: Republican states are reopening much more swiftly than Democratic states. A most notable case in point is the revival strategies of the four largest states. California and New York are closed for weeks to come; Florida and Texas are getting back in business now.

Unfortunately, most blue-state governors, with a few notable exceptions, are imperiling their states’ recoveries and the very survival of their businesses by remaining shuttered.”

This article is about the debate in the various states regarding the issue of the protests and the resulting re open America debate. It grades the various states on their restarting of their economies. I’m in total agreement with the conclusions reached by the author Stephen Moore.

I can’t stand it that some in the biggest cities in America want the whole country to shelter in place as long as they have to do so and accuse protesters of being willing to kill their grandma to save their careers or investments, and the governors of both parties who back up such ideas.

The big cities cannot force anyone outside the big city they control to do anything.

There are blue states where the large city/ cities do try to dictate terms to the rural surroundings in the state the city dominates. Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois come to mind and California to some extent.

There are also people in rural states trying to dictate to big cities; the fault is the system we are trying to use in this fight. In this fight the leader has told his generals you guys do what you think you need to do. There is no coordination. That is why South Dakota and Michigan are very different.

So how does South Dakota never locking down dictating anything to say Chicago or Detroit? Or even within a state, how does my local county in largely rural Northern California opening up now dictate to Oakland or Los Angeles which may not re open until mid summer?

Just because Trump chose not to be a control freak dictator with god complex issues like some wanted or feared doesn’t mean the feds were AWOL. They followed the constitution and did a federalist approach coordinating with the states to meet their needs as they arose and create federal private partnerships to get things produced only rarely compelling it. Trump is governing much closer to the constitution than any President since Reagan.

That's not what I said I said they were different. People get confused and/or upset when they see someone else that doesn't have to do what they do. The Protesters in Michigan need to understand that their state is different than South Dakota. There needs to be a universal set of guidelines to be followed by all states/cities that allow them to adjust to what is happening. Those guidelines should indicate steps that need to be taken in individual places when certain thresholds are met.

So how does locking down Detroit effect South Dakota?

I don't see any option on this poll for what should be the only option: follow the experts' advice. There is a guideline. It was put out by the Trump administration's CDC. I say again: the Trump administration's CDC. So I don't know why or how this became a partisan issue (actually, I do know but... let's not get into that right now). These are experts. They know what they're talking about. Is it possible that experts can make a mistake? Sure... But the difference in the probability that they're wrong compared to the probability of dopes who just want to open at any cost is enormous.

Hey! Look here!... I'm praising something this administration did! Those guidelines are scientifically constructed and show great common sense. Why are we not following them? Why are Trump supporters the ones who are ignoring them, and liberals the ones who are pointing to them today? I know in a few months, Trump will use on his "flock" his "Electro bio-mechanical neural transmitting zero synapse repositioner", better known by MIB insiders as the Neuralyzer. So they "forget" who undermined and who touted the guidelines. That way he believes he can take credit for it. But taking credit won't save any lives. Applying it will.

This is actually simple. Opening too soon means the numbers will start going up again. Usually within two weeks after the openings. Which means states shut down again, and we have actually extended.... not shortened.... the amount of time that will be required to fully reopen the economy.

Many states (including my own: Florida) started opening last Friday despite the fact that they did not meet CDC guidelines to reopen. I posted on another thread AI models showing that, if they had only waited until May 16 to start opening, the probabilities that they would need to shut down again would have been almost zero. And we would have had our last coronavirus infection somewhere around mid September.

But we didn't. At this point, because of poor judgement, those models show the pandemic ending in our country around mid December instead. But that could move even further back as more and more states make stupid decisions.

The first point is that it is not simple. No matter when they open up, the number of deaths will go up. That will continue until this virus is completely eliminated, which might be years.

The issue, is what is an acceptable level. And I already know you will say there is no acceptable level. It is back to the same logic. Everything we do has risk. We accept it until it becomes unacceptable and there is no firm set of numbers that are acceptable.

The individual states opening is based on two criteria.
Red States are already up and running in most segments.
Blue states are going to stay closed as long as possible so they can blame Trump for the destruction of those state's economies.
Blue states that are up to their fetlocks in unfunded liabilities (think CA with over a $trillion all by themselves) will be lobbying for a Federal bailout amounting to $ trillions. Following any bailout, they will immediately return to their old ways of irresponsible spending.
God bless Trump and the Republicans controlling the senate.
Trump turning over the opening of individual states to the discretion of the Governor was absolutely brilliant.

Florida is going to need the largest bailout due to it's reliance on tourism. It's a Red state.
Montana was the first state to reopen, it's got a Democrat Governor.

Seems to be more a factor of which states have the largest ports of entry (airports, sea ports) and population density as
to who opens first, rather than who is governor. Even in states like Florida, the counties with the largest populations are still shut
down, even though the rest of the state is open.

And you would be wrong.... There is no acceptable level of preventable deaths. People who die because, for example, they are allergic to the vaccine. Or because they are too dumb to adhere to safety guidelines. Or because of involuntary errors. Or for some unforeseeable condition.... Those are inevitable. We follow what common sense based on scientific fact dictates. And we don't have all the time in the world to get all the Science right. So we compromise.

Deaths that are caused by incompetence of the people making decisions, or who completely disregards what the available science indicates... those are not acceptable.

We just do the best we can with all the information available: science, what we saw in other countries, expert opinions.... not political expediency. But this administration has never done the best we can.

You can label the deaths however you want. Inevitable or acceptable. It all pretty much boils down to the same thing. We can't realistically do much better without unacceptable sacrifices in other areas. The deaths due to this virus are not likely to go to zero for many years. We have car accidents which kill people. Doctors make mistakes which kill people. We finally end up settling for an acceptable number of deaths. We try to minimize them within reason, but we finally accept them as reality

You throw around the word "science" like it is some magic wand. Ultimately, it is just the opinion of people with varying degrees of accuracy.

All states should follow the guidelines for reopening outlined on TV by President Trump and most of the problems would go away wouldn't they.
