I a democracy everyone is the government because we are the sovereign. So your argument is absurde: Everyone has the the right to be religious and to show this. That's the freedom of religion.

This would mean atheism is the only allowed state-religion. Religions are always public. Example: If someone tears a crucifix from a wall then the empty place there is the destructive sign of the religion atheism. Only because such an agressive sign is invisible and looks like all other empty spaces it doesn't mean such sign are not here in a spiritual way of view on the world.

Based upon the First Amendment a personal belief in the Flying Spaghetti Monster is just as much a religion as the Christian religion. I personally find the 8 I'd Really Rather You Didn't more compelling and logical than the 10 Commandments.

Celebration of the winter solstice often with the exchange of gifts existed long before Christianity and it was a pagan celebration adopted by the Christians so yes, others can celebrate the holidays without any connections to religion. Today most athiests celebrate the holidays just as much as Christians and even for most Christians it's about Santa Claus, Christmas trees and decorative lighting that has absolutely nothing to do with religion. Christmas today really has little to do with religion in the United States or elsewhere.

I'm not personally into mocking someone else's beliefs but then people have the right to do that if they choose. No one is actually harmed and no one's rights are being violated. The "Christians" were not being denied the ability to present a religious display on Santa Monica on public property even though they don'r really have a right to do so. In the end I believe the actions of the City of Santa Monica were correct in simply stopping the practice of allowing religious displays on public property. From the government's perspective the holidays should be secular as opposed to sectarian. Christmas trees, Santa Claus, elves, garlands, and lights are non-religious and would be acceptable but displays of religious beliefs should not be allowed.

Please: That's nonsense and everyone knows this. The argument "flying spaghetty monster" says only : everyone should have the right to say that believers in god are sick idiots!

Atheism is not a religion. It is a absence of religion. Government is not concerned with promoting religion under the US Constitution and is expressly prohibited from doing so by the First Amendment and the US Supreme Court decision in Reynolds v United States. Finally, we don't live in a democracy and democracy was rejected by the founders of the United States and democracy results in the violation of the Rights of the Minority by the Majority.

In context, they all have religious connotations, that much is true. But that isn't the same thing as saying they're religious in nature. I put up lights and trees every year - I don't think they represent a fertility goddess or anything like that. Christians put up lights and trees, thinking they are in some vague manner related to Jesus or god or something - I suspect most of them don't even know what the religious link is supposed to be. Does that mean lights and trees are religious? Of course not.

Santa on the other hand, despite being usurped by advertisers, is clearly religious in nature, I'll give you that.

What you quoted wasn't give an argument, it was an opinion. And it is your opinion that his opinion is absurd. And it is my opinion that your opinion of his opinion is laughable.

A state religion is a religion officially endorsed by the state. Let's put aside the inane moronic dribble about atheism being a religion in this context because, despite the fact that it is no more a religion than dieting or listening to rock music, the state could still endorse atheism as a position. But unless it does, it is SECULAR, not ATHEIST. There is a difference.

That's one of the dogmas (=doctrines) of the religion atheism. Maybe you are thinking you are in the truth if you say so while I am thinking "Poor guy, I don't know how he could be able to reach a higher level of self awareness about his own religion"

Or with other words: Christmas is Christmas. We Christians are celebrating Christmas at Christmas tide - together with every Muslims who likes to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ and together with every Jew who likes to celebrate Hanuka. But we don't celebrate with or against flying spaghetti monsters.

No one is forced to know something.

Seems to me you are celebrating against Christmas by celebrating Christmas.

Good grieve - we are thinking ... eeek ... who said so? - What's written in the bible about? ...

No - you are right. We are related. God is our father.

Be happy - otherwise we would be intelligent and a great danger and you woud live i fear as you are doing anyway.

I feel an answer to this point in my own language only: http://youtu.be/tjUnVo-LQN4

By the way: Some children here are thinking I am Santa. Isn't this funny? I hearc them hwi the aksed "He is Santa Claus?" - "Yes!" - "Do you really think?" "Yes - he is it". We are celebrating Santa Claus at 6th of december here in our Christmas universe.

If someone puts up an argument about xmas tree or santa clause on public property, the city/gov't would have to follow the same rules put forth by a religious scene. All or nothing. Can't pick and choose.

Probably not, I'm not one of those who likes to pretend the FSM is a genuine religion. Although now that I think about it, I could celebrate this time of year with some spaghetti related items - that would be mildly amusing and I'd still be celebrating with you, even though I know the FSM is just a joke.

    Sorry, what's your point?

Then it seems to me you are wrong. I don't celebrate the birth of Christ or anything religious. I see an excuse to party and promote a good atmosphere and I take it, and I have no problem using the word 'Christmas' for that time of year, it's only a name.

    To coin a phrase:

You misrepresented the meaning of the sentence. 'They' refers to the trees, garlands. lights etc. Good job avoiding the point, then.

I've said a few times that you seem to me to be an intelligent guy, so that's not a very good parody you're performing. Nonetheless, clever people sometimes say, do, and believe stupid things. Good job avoiding the point though.

Believe it or not, my speakers aren't working right now. What song is this?

Yeah, children can be really funny.

If this is going to be discussed then we'll be headed into the dreaded territory of definitions. Do you disagree that religion, in this context, necessarily involves belief in or worship of a deity or other supernatural entity?

i just want to say here, introducing an article as "the intolerant, hatefule atheists" or any other immediate insult is not a way of starting. couldn't you have phrased it, " atheist activists protest santa monica christmas tradition, thoroughly ending it" it would mean the same thing but inspire less extremists to come debate on this forum. you could also phrase your comments as an opinion, and not fact. this would probably keep people from responding in anger, and keep people generally civil. though i doubt it would completely keep extremists from coming here, ignoring there attempts to incite anger surely would. so please, in the future, try starting a thread in a less hateful tone.

Pastafarianism was created in 2005 to protest against intelligent design. It is not a real religion, but a parody one.

I mostly agree with this, but depending on how you choose to celebrate it, Christmas could have a lot to do with relgiion.

Santa Monica has been doing this for 60 years, and now all of a sudden it is unconstitutional? I could really care less about puting up Nativity scenes out in public. My church is enough for me, but I find the idea that religion should should be a private affair is ridiculous. What exactly do you call church? That's not private. How though, is puting up a nativity scene on public grounds harming anyone? How is it taking away anyone's rights? I have no problem with any other group puting up their message for the holidays. I just question the motives of this atheist group. Nonbelievers can do as they choose. I don't think they should put up disrespectful displays, just as I don't think people should act irresponsible.

it was done until Christians realized they had to share, then they decided it was better to have none then to allow others to use the public land to display their alternative beliefs

    solstice

annual new year for the earth

Great day to celebrate. "WE made it, to another!"

lying to children, should be illegal, all of the time!

Misleading should just not be allowed.

It is like creating a terrorist, to mislead a mind.
it was supposed to be for schooling=education.

It is against, every law of any god to lie to people that some dude, died so you can lie (sin).
because the story behind what happened is a lie.

    Misleading people, is wrong!
we all have a right to honest witnessing of truth.
Telling people a lie about what their life is about, what it is for and that they must worchip, is complete false witness of truth (lying) and no one has a right to do that.

    OK.....

    Save mankind, shoot a liar!

Is that a good punch line for the religion(s) of truth?
