Politicians, both D and R, know better than to disrupt social security payments. Period. Relax seniors. Today's date is May 20, 2023, and I'll repost this statement in a couple of weeks after a budget deal is reached. --- I don't call myself a soothsayer -- but some things in politics are easily predictable.
There is an entire thread of hysterics claiming the Republicans were going to stop Social Security payments. Sometimes they're funny.
And the media loves to report those quotes, over and over. Ever notice the repubs never accuse the dem of wanting to cut SS but the dems are always stating the repubs want to cut SS. That's also predictable.
If you liked the 'Chaos!' hyperbole of the national debt ceiling process just ended, you'll absolutely love the lead-up to the October 1st deadline for the federal budget. You can think of a number of members of our two political parties as forming a repertoire group. Appearing in both the debt ceiling and budget presentations, they have the advantage that many of their lines are the same. Lay in the popcorn and enjoy the farce. Regards, stay safe 'n well.
Both sides were in an untenable position. If we had defaulted there would have been a lot of new political faces after the next election. This is a language politicians understand.
What’s the budget got to do with anything? When Nancy Pelosi was in charge, there was no Federal budget for a few years. the government ran by the financial seat of its pants. The debt ceiling is the only legal means that such a crisis develops.
You are correct. The main thing many people in Washington want to do is stay in power. That’s why I have come to support term limits as a way to get a few of them to think out of the box. We could use term limits for a good part of the bureaucracy too. Collectively they are now more powerful and Congress. Even the president has very limited control over them. Presidents come and go; the bureaucracy is eternal.
Hi, John Hamilton. Hold that question until September. You may have an answer. Regards, stay safe 'n well.
I think you are referring to the thread that I created, notice that the thread title doesn't mention that social security payments WILL stop rather than they MIGHT stop in case of a default. I'm very aware that the fiscal Hawks in the GOP do not want to touch the social security and Medicare payments to their seniors, many of them are their base. I started this thread because I wanted to highlight the hypocrisy of many of the conservative seniors on this board who receive their comfortable monthly social security check but at the other hand think that somehow the budget can be balanced without touching the big three, namely defense Medicare and social security. That, however, is not possible, so if you actually are thinking about balancing the budget, then cuts to those three programs have to be made. I'd be happy to have an actual discussion, instead of the ridiculing that was done in this other thread.
Did you look at Sen Scott's from Florida's plan where even the SS and Medicare would sunset after five years?
Well your thread about Social Security was always wrong because quite simply Social Security is funded by FICA which is not part of the budget process. Of course you were told this but it doesn't matter because it was simply a talking point. A false one to be sure, but I notice that didn't matter in the other thread and likely won't matter here.
I've commented on Scott's plan on this forum before. I've thought it was stupid and has zero support. But sure, go ahead and run with it. While you do you can explain what it has to do with the budget deal which is what this thread is about.
