Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt (R), who is looking to unseat Gov. Laura Kelly (D) in next year’s gubernatorial election, became on Monday the first in the race to sign a candidate pledge aimed at combatting divisive race-based curricula in public schools.

Upon signing the pledge, dubbed the “1776 Pledge to Save Our Schools” and launched last month by the group 1776 Action, Schmidt indicated in a statement he opposes school teachings that cause students to think they are “oppressors or victims” depending on their skin color or sex.

“We can teach our children the whole truth about American history, good and bad, without resorting to controversial and divisive political theories that leave kids believing they are inherently oppressors or victims,” he said, adding that public education should not “discount the fundamental goodness of American freedoms and values.”

This is great news! It’s great to hear that a candidate for Governor of a state is standing up for America in the teaching of American history in our schools. The 1776 commission won a battle for the truth.

CRT and 1619 are perversions of history.

This is good news. And since the left says they’re not really teaching what the right is accusing them of, then they should have no problem signing the pledge, too.,

So basically he doesn’t want to teach history in schools any longer… I wonder what course he would prefer to replace it with?

The pledge is crap. It requires you to preach Christian beliefs and wants to teach about historical documents and nothing contemporary.

CRT and 1619 aren't history. They're anti-white racism. Big difference. Further, they're anti-black racism to the extent they tell blacks they cannot achieve anything worthwhile because they're black.

They're literally the most vile of racism ever. Worse than the KKK.

No one is saying oppressors and victims don’t exist in history. They are saying the oppressors and victims of the past does not transfer over by dint of an individuals skin color or gender into making the kids of today oppressors or victims.

    Great...Sure Thing...:bored:

Somebody in the GOP has discovered that disparaging our schools and the way they teach American history might be a winning talking point in coming election cycles, so the party seems to be having at it. So desperate are Republicans for a wedge that will help them regain a majority in one or both houses of Congress and maybe even win the White House that they’ve made up an issue that seems to have no basis in fact.

Teaching about historical documents in history. What a shocking concept! I understand that atheists have to reject our founding documents, our founding fathers, and our founding itself since so much of it refers to the role of God in it all.

With this one man sadly. But we need the entire country to back this man. This man took a brave stand and it is commendable.

    It is about money.
IF one can badger white children to accept they are the reason Blacks complain of some perceived injustice, the blacks will happily accept compensation provided by the White kids who then accept guilt as adults. It is a vicious cycle at that point. A never ending trap.

The victims died long ago and so has their oppressors all died. Will they accept confederate money as full compensation?

CRT and the 1619 Project teach the true history. What was taught when I went to school was wrong.
The politicians sure do want to make an issue of this don't they?

The pledge is to not teach contemporary stuff in civics classes, not history classes.

It's still promoting propaganda though, just a different kind that promotes nationalist exceptionalism, blind hero worship and religious bias. You're all as bad as each other.

The role of men using the idea of God. They had great ideas about rights and freedom, but like those who birthed and developed those ideas before them, they needed an authority figure to give them legitimacy, so that they were elevated above just another set of ideas from humankind. That's where the God archetype comes in.

Perhaps back then it was necessary. But no matter where in history you look, anything attributed to God has been born of and done by man. Every single thing. Including "natural rights" and "god-given rights".

Those didn't exist until man invented them, codified them into law, and protected them. That's why they still don't exist in the places where they are not part of the law and protected.

Can you show me where I said anyone living was responsible for anything that happened generations ago? I bet ya can’t…

Your strawman arguments aside, history has both oppressor and victims, conquerors and slaves, good and bad, how can we teach history without teaching those things?

And to expand on that, discussions linking the victims of history to today's world is not a horrible thing. It is possible to have contemporary discussions about the fallout without making one side a villain.

History is a lie, agreed-upon Napoleon

THIS is what we should teach children about history. It's ALL propaganda. There is no such thing as the "accepted" version. You pays your money and you takes your pick.
