I have been building my own computers for some 30 years. I try to make each rig last about 6 years. My current Ryzen 7 1700 16 Gig DDR 4 RX480 8 Gig RAM is now just over 4 years. My biggest concern is an affordable GPU.

Have you been watching what is happening since Covid? Prices have been insane.

But, maybe things are starting to normalize. For example, I've seen a $500ish 6800 for about $700. While still too much for this card, that isn't as bad as $2K for a GTX 3800.

What have you seen? Is the shortage almost over? Are you shopping for a card?

I’m thinking about building a new box, but I might just buy a pre-built.

I know. The prices of GPU's alone are what I would normally pay for a whole new pre built computer. I may just use what I have until Microsoft ceases to support the OS, which for windows 10 will be sometime in 2025..... and then switch over to a Linux OS which (I'm told)will run on just about anything. I am considering the Zorin OS. BTW, I have a 3.5 Ghz 8 core proc, 16 gigs of ram, one terabyte HD. 500W power supply, usb 3.0, mid range gpu with 4 gigs of dedicated video ram, and windows 10. It runs fast, cool and quiet. But microsoft tells me it's too old for their new OS. :angered:

I think the mother board has to have some security chip on it to work for Windows 11.
They're finally making games a bit too demanding for my rig if I want to play 1080p, never mind 4K. I think most rigs will play anything at 30 FPS 720p but for me a lot of fun to be had pushing the envelope.

I think they designed Windows 11 to force people to buy new computers. Mine is certainly powerful enough. It's very frustrating, like having a muscle car that won't run on new type of fuel, and old type fuel will be done away with.

Ugh... Bought a prebuilt. I haven't researched it nearly enough and I don't keep up with this stuff so it's a pretty intense effort to get up to speed on current PC hardware for me. I knew just enough from browsing that GE Force Cards are fairly wicked and so on the recent Prime day I went ahead and bought this puppy for $1529, which was $270 off at the time. Looks like the price has gone up a bit to $1849 from $1799.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09JQD9BH6/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR Gaming PC, Intel Core i7-12700KF 3.6GHz, GeForce RTX 3060 12GB, 16GB DDR4, 500GB NVMe PCIe SSD, 2TB HDD, WiFi & Win 11 Home (GXiVR8400A9), Black

Wait, no not quite, this $1849 model has a 2T HD and mine only came with one 500GB. Pisser, eh? 12G of video RAM and they sold me on a shitbird 500G HD.

Help me out gear heads, was this a fairly sweet deal or not so much?

Oh good lord, this does have a 2T D: drive.

Hahahaha.... Sorry, I was splurging on a buying spree last week.

Jeez, and I was getting ready to buy another SSD for it, freaking moron.

And all the fun of setting up a new Win 11 box: what's not to love, hahaha - I'm getting too old for this ****....

got this machine custom made by the local geek. With every computer I buy I’m always making sure I eliminate the reason why I had to get a new one, with this computer I made sure it won’t overheat. I also loaded up on the memory and went for 64gigs. When I walked into the store I told the guy I want a computer that will get me through the next five or six versions of Photoshop and for under $2500 I got a spaceship. I’m not a gamer, but my last computer would go crazy if I made complex selections in Photoshop, the fans would go nuts. As for the video card, I never realized how rendering in Photoshop is done with that card. I have no problems with the video card I have or the machine as a whole.

Sorry for the late reply: I thing you got a good deal too. They're still asking $1,500 today, 1/18/2023 on Amazon. I hope to build something similar. See below.

I love the dual fans on your CPU. Dark Rock? I'll try to remember that.
I have a buddy that does Photoshop and more and at one point, his graphics cards could compile video faster than his CPU. (GTX 970 at the time).

I'm a gamer. I'm old so I'm likely doing my last Game build as I am old AND 10 years from now, gaming will not look like as it does today. Things are already changing. IE I'm watching a video regarding the 55" curve Samsung Odyssey Ark and the guy says you don't even need a game console or gaming PC. Just use the applications such as the Xbox Gamepass app on the monitor! @8:30

ITMT: I hope to build this thing Q1 2024. Like Grey Matter above, I want a ton of storage. I'm thinking at least:

    2TB SSD stick,
2x8 TB 7200 HD mirrored to each other, hot swap - able,
External: Maybe a 12 TB Western Digital.

That should last me till I'm in my 70s at which point we'll all be gaming off 3d projections from our cell phones or other Jettson's type tech.

I'm out of the 'game' for a few years now. Eyestrain and I got busy.

These are amazing setups though. still gives me the itch reading about/looking at them.

An Nvidia notification just popped up and clicked through to install the driver updates. Nicely done. No reboot necessary - although it wouldn't have taken long anyway on this new box. The screens just turned off for a brief moment, pretty slick and this ole boy is impressed. Not enough to make up for all of the shortcomings in Office 365 apps and loss of GUI features in the OS though. Effing Microsquish.....

I started another thread specifically about handhelds. I remember in 2017ish a guy writing a column, thanking the Nintendo Switch for giving him gaming again. Even if it is just for use for 1/2 an hour on the train, it is something in his busy life.
My boy asked his guitar teacher back in the day the best way to store his guitar. Teacher replied,"any way that is convenient to you and will get you to play it." That's kinda how it is much of the time for many of us (gaming must be easily accessible).
12 years ago I got a PS Vita. My eyes can barely see it's screen. Just got the Steam Deck and the screen works for me. Just hung out with the wife while she was quilting and got an hour of Firewatch, which I already own on PC, on the Steam Deck. I didn't have to go out and buy new games all over again.

With the monster PC you got (RTX 3060!) just download a free app and get some games!
This one is giving away a game for free Thursdays 11 AM Eastern weekly. Free games daily around Christmas. https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/ Amazon Prime members get free games weekly. Good time to get into this stuff even if just to mess around with this stuff!

ITMT: I'm seeing the RTX 4070ti finally around $820. This, for a fanatic like me doing his last build? This is doable. Example: https://www.microcenter.com/product...-triple-fan-12gb-gddr6x-pcie-40-graphics-card Dunno if I'll do this in the fall during things like Black Friday or wait for a tax holiday. We'll see.
