Life Sentence for Being Gay in Uganda

    From the same part of the Bible that calls for homosexuals to be executed.

    Leviticus 20:9 - For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood [shall be] upon him.

    Deuteronomy 21:18 - 21:21
    18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and [that], when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:

    19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;

    20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son [is] stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; [he is] a glutton, and a drunkard.

    21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

    Exactly. We just disagree on what those are in some cases, though we would probably agree on the majority of issues.

    I guess you'd only have to do it once to get the message across....now is that before the child is 5 or after? Hard to imagine a 5 year old as indolent, abusive, and drunken.

    The bible is very clear on the subject of homosexual relationships.
    Leviticus 20:13
    English Standard Version (ESV)
    13 If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

    It seem Uganda is going easy on them.

    Human rights are a concept you believe in, these people have a different set of beliefs; why do you think your version is better?

    I'm saying, they have a version of what's right, based on their holy book.
    If you deny their right to live by their religious beliefs; you're anti Christian; or at least, their version of it.
    You have to remember, if you're a Christian , you're supposed to live by the bible.
    It's the western countries that have let things drop.

    It's all semantics my dear man, it's all semantics. To honor your mother and father is the same as do not dishonor your mother and father. And to surely die is the same as not to live a long life. So tell me now, if you dishonor your mother and father and become a murderer and criminal, do you think you will live long? I don't!

    But look, ignorance like this is commonplace when one doesn't have the correct spiritual guidance in their life.

    SF Jeff - Stop looking at the Old Testament. These laws were in affect at a time when God was preparing the Jews for the advent of Jesus Christ. If you consider them harsh, then one can only imagine the cruelty and immorality which must have existed in the pagan world at the time.

    Why? You think that we should feel good if the bigotry of some Christians is equal or slightly inferior to UGANDAN politicians and extreme Islamists?

    You're please with meeting the "lowest common denominator" rules on "morality?"

    Hard to put a child to death twice.

    I find ignorance commonplace amongst Christians who profess a believe in Christ but cherry pick from the New Testament what they want and ignore that which they don't.

    It seems Uganda is going easy on disrespectful children.

    Yes- I do think my version of human rights is better.

    I don't believe in jailing people for life for happening to love someone of the same gender.

    Yes. The God of the Old Testament and that same God in the New Testament see's homosexuallity as an abomination. But reason you don't see Christians killing homosexuals...is because Leviticus was speaking to the Jewish people on a specific covenant. Which "upgraded" to the covenant of Jesus Christ. Its not Christians you should be arguing with...its today's Jews. I've never been able to figure out how they can still be in a covenant with God but not follow it. Not that I think they should...but logically why shouldn't they?

    So God wanted Jews to kill homosexuals....but the same God doesn't want Christians to kill homosexuals.

    The reason we don't see Christians killing homosexuals- very often- or legally- today is because Christianity has evolved. There was a time where homosexuality was punishable by death by 'good Christians'

    Anyhoo....

    If we take the Old Testament out of the equation- what do we have left in the Bible that condemns homosexuality?

    Not Jesus's words of course. Jesus doesn't mention homosexuality even once. He condemns adultery of course- condemns it very vociforously- and condemns re-marriage after divorce EXCEPT when the woman was unfaithful.

    Of the very many things that Jesus speaks of in the New Testament, why do so many 'Christians' focus so much energy on homosexuals, instead of what Jesus told his followers to do?

    God's disdain for homosexuality is all through the Bible, old and new and frankly I'm tired. Or would quote verses. Its a sin...and God chose to kill people who sinned for more then just sexuality issues. He has the right as the creator to take what He has given.

    I'm not a scholar on Jews or Jewish law--but I believe God was molding His people to be strong...morally, and spiritually. I believe God wanted a people for His plan that would last the ages. America will eventually fall as we fall away from God into obscurity and weakness---but somehow the Jews with all their liberal "issues" will survive and be cohesive. Go figure.

    The coming of Christ was a new age and a new mission. We weren't here to "execute" homosexuals but to make sure they heard the Good News and had the opportunity to choose Christ. Christ taught tolerance in the new age--but he didn't teach us to accept sin as "ok".

    True- God chose to kill or command to be killed lots of folks- including children. Very inspiring.

    I think America will rise or fall completely unrelated to who believes in what God.

    I would agree the Christ of the New Testament is very different- tolerance I don't know whether that is truely what he taught- but Christ did teach a great many things yet for so many Christians it seems that the only message they heard was Paul's notes on homosexuals.

    Hmmmm in this case it is Christian homophobia- as the Christian majority of Uganda decided to bring some Old Testament style punishment down on Ugandans who dare love someone of the same gender.

    Because homosexuals are trying to change the definition of marriage. And they are advocating and succeeding in trying to sell homosexuality to school children regardless of the parents. So sure, the Christian view comes up...especially when asked such as GQ did in taking the initiative and asking for Phil Robertson's viewpoint. Very in your face and aggressive. Otherwise....I doubt you would even know a Christians view on homosexuality.

    Leviticus was written during and after the Babylonian exile. Its laws and rituals were created by the Levites to give Jews a separate Identity. Then they wrote Genesis and Exodus and Deuteronomy.
