Well, he resigned, and this means he is out of Congress.

The question is, will Speaker Johnson allow him to come back? Will Desantis appoint him to Rubio's seat?

I hope neither, but with these Republicans, anything goes.

Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his nomination for Attorney General, citing the distraction it posed to the Trump administration. Following this, he resigned from his position in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gaetz faced challenges in securing confirmation due to allegations of sex trafficking minors, which he denies. Although he was re-elected in November and his election has been certified, it remains unclear if he can reclaim his seat, as he indicated he wouldn't take the oath of office for the next Congress. There are speculations about whether Florida Governor Ron DeSantis could appoint him to Marco Rubio's Senate seat, which has opened up due to Rubio's anticipated appointment as Secretary of State. Gaetz has also been considered a potential candidate for future political roles, including governor, but has expressed no current interest in running for that position.

I don't know how the process works but I'm pretty sure he just can't change his mind. I thought he resigned from congress. I don't think there are take-backs on that but like I said, not sure how it works.

Just a few thoughts that are not particularly partisan in nature. They are just my inner thoughts working through the subject...

The Gaetz pick for AG never made any sense to me. He never had a chance of approval, if for no other reason than that there are a lot of Republicans that hate his guts and with a slim majority, he had no chance of approval from the start. I know you folks will like to just say Trump is stupid blah blah blah, but as a two time elected President, it is not credible to claim he does not understand the political landscape that he just maneuvered his second huge election win. Of course he knows the political landscape and its nuances, and of course he knew that Gaetz could not be confirmed.

With that being said, he nominated him for a reason. Part of me thinks that reason is the art of the deal and he nominated a truly unappetizing choice so that the next one who may be borderline is accepted due to looking moderate in comparison. The other part of me thinks he did this so that Gaetz could resign, thus avoiding what Trump and Gaetz surely see as a bogus politically motivated Democrat driven ethics hearing that was scheduled for last week. Knowing that he was just elected, he can still be sworn in with the rest of the new congresspeople in January, and with the new congress where Republicans are in charge and the politically motivated ethics hearing will not be a thing.

I think I’ve heard resignations can be contingent on appointment. Don’t know if Gaetz did that though.

The only way it would make sense is the contrast between him and Gabbard and RFKjr, thus if he is rejected, the Senate will have less of the stomach to reject three in a row. So, his strategy might have been to give a bone to the Senate, make them feel like they are doing their job, that they are not being a rubber stamp, in order to get the lesser evils through.

But, frankly, I don't think he is smart enough for that kind of strategic thinking, though some are arguing it, but Miller is, his advisor.
    Yeah, bingo, that's it.

Just my opinion but once you resign the only way you can get back in is to get re-elected. Hopefully we will not have yet another criminal elected to our pretend government.

What does Trump say about this??

Don't think Gatz is fit for any gov't job . IF he is granted power again..... it is doubtful that his behavior will change.

But as the Trump party has and continues to introduce a totally "different" value system.......... it seems that one can expect anything. ( The more borderline and shady .......the more Trumpian it is)

Someone mentioned "the Art of the Deal"......... first Trump did not write that book. He is NOT an intelligent deal maker. He is a con man who manipulates others ( with fear tactics) to do what he wants.

But........Good thing Goetz has left. Not sure he did it of his own accord. For all we know Trump might be behind it as even though he DEMANDS LOYALTY...........he is loyal to no one. ( folks are totally dispersible .) And Goetz was taking the attention away from Trump.in the media (for eg) ( a sign of disloyalty)

Don't hold your breath on that "wish" ;-) Technically a criminal has been voted for POTUS..........so the qualifications of anyone joining this "administration"..........are very loose, biased to favor Trump. Given Donalds propensity for firing staff......who knows how long any of them will be there. (the very loyal....and obviously DEVOTED to Trump will remain.

    Nonsense.

He was just elected handily. Nobody would have a right to say he isn't entitled to be sworn in with all the other new congresspeople. He resigned from the 118th congress. Not the 119th.

There may be a couple procedural hurdles, but they will undoubtedly be traversed if that is his desire. If he chose to run for something else, he would be a strong candidate for that as well. Hes not necessarily my cup of tea, but he is more than politically viable.

    @Patricio Da Silva

    You are wrong once again...

Matt Gaetz can still be a special counsel prosecutor...
And Matt Gaetz is *still* a Representative-elect. Matt Gaetz only resigned his seat from the 118th Congress But he was just elected to serve in the 119th Congress, which begins in January.

It's true that the Right does admire their sexual abusers. I'm sure they'll find a way.

An unsolicited, meaningless insult that is a reply to a post that wasn't directed toward you in the first place.

    How gauche.

Trump believes, correctly on many levels, that his first administration was hampered by cabinet members and department heads who were opposed to him and his goals. His current picks are outside the establishment and support his vision.

If you look at the people who were in his campaign strategy war rooms, they are all being announced to key positions in his administration. Gaetz was one of those people who helped strategize his campaign and Trump trusts him. Gaetz was on the weaponization of government subcommittee. He's been involved in a lot of the transcribed interviews and investigations. He knows where a lot of the Biden admin bodies are buried and he would have gone after them just as harshly as the Soros funded wackadoodles went after him.

For those reasons, I'm fairly certain that Trump was serious about the Gaetz nomination. He's picking from his anti-establishment strategists and personal friends.

Trump nominating Gaetz. He passed the 'real man' test...

Well I did note that Gaetz would be yet another criminal in his entourage. Trump's regime will be the most powerful criminal cartel this planet has ever seen. What else can be expected from a blatant fascist and rapist found guilty of multiple felonies?

and he should NOT. But given the environment in Trump world..... it seems that almost anything goes or can happen. Instability will probably be the defining characteristic of the coming adm.

There ya go !!! Indeed and well phrased. What can one expect with their "leader" thinks like a mobster ?? He is looking for like minded "mob thinking" people to staff his adm.

What is also really crazy........ he will probably do his voters proud. What does THAT say about the country in general?? That is what most of the planet is asking now.(and rightly so)
(just like Trump........the mob uses FEAR to control others and to punish them for perceived slights and offenses. )

(an aside: but there is a general cooling towards the US now....world wide..... as the US has become unpredictable , (unreliable ) and any trust is being eroded . Once this happens.... well everyone should know how hard it is to regain any credibility again;. Trump's isolationist ideology might be more successful than even he anticipated. one cannot BULLY others into respecting a nation. Respect is EARNED and once lost...... almost impossible to get back.

I dont disagree that Gaetz is truly someone Trump likes a lot or that he is being careful this term to appoint loyalists as opposed to establishment types that are prevalent in DC. Where our opinion differs, is that it is my belief that Trump is smart enough to know that given the speaker of the house battles in recent years, there is no way that he would be able to hold together such a narrow governing coalition of 53-47 amongst Republicans in order to get him passed. You already know you have Murkowski and 1 or two other other basically leftists Republicans that will not go along, and amongst the rest there is just no way that there isn't a few that are pissed enough at him about the speaker battles that they would never vote to confirm. My guess is that there is likely at least 8 or 10 of those. Right or wrong, a lot of people were livid about his actions and saw his actions as against the party.

The reality that he has dropped out is not surprising even slightly. I believe that Trump knows the political landscape well enough that he knew he could not be confirmed which is why I say and have believed all along that he surely had another motive. My guess is it was to save Gaetz from the BS assault with BS rehashing of old allegations that was about to occur in the last death throes of the democrat led Senate majority. I think Trump did it as an F-You to their last gasp at their ability to wield what they turned into a weaponized majority. He resigned from the 119th but will rejoin in the 120th when Republicans have the majority which means they lead all the committees and will not pursue such frivolous justice department investigated and and subsequently ignored assertions. I believe Trump did this as a favor to his friend/ally.

Im not putting him down for doing so. Im acknowledging and admiring his guile. I simply believe his intent all along was to appoint Pam Bondi whom is also a close friend.

I doubt Florida Republicans will give him a chance to run. If he did then either they back him wholeheartedly or guarantee the democrats win the seat by splitting the republican vote.
It would only take the release of the congressional report which given the republican panel members blocking it's release before is not likely to be repeated will make him toast from what we already know. Can you imagine his running and congress releases a report more damning than paying prostitutes for silence and sex with a teenager while an adult?
    Nope, FOXNEWS it is.

Gaetz could absolutely go back to Congress in Jan. 2025. He only resigned from the current Congress.
Assuming he decides to take his seat for the new term (which he was duly elected, and doesn't even start until January), at that point the ethics report could (should, would) be released.
Then, the authors of the report would make a recommendation on a course of action.
One would think that they would recommend Expulsion, but that is no sure thing.
For example, the Ethics people could recommend a lesser sanction like Censure, and Gaetz could keep his seat.
Zero chance that Gaetz would be appointed by Ron D. for the Senate vacancy. None.
