In a war terrible things happen. I wouldn't put my signature under what you just stated.

Its like saying our border control personnel never operated into Indonesian waters, or they never burnt the hands of refugees on hot exhaust pipes.........

    Real life is different!!!!

    regards

Conflict, war, piece keeping mission, policing, it's all war.

Cosgrove served the Australian people, he did this through many governments both Liberal and Labor. Having served in the armed forces, politics really doesn't come into it. I know it is hard to believe, but it is true, soldiers hold a lot of things sacred, and their ability to act without prejudice is one of them. I served under governments I wouldn't P1ss on, I was serving you, all of you, whether you liked it or not, sheesh I was even serving CD if he had immigrated here that long ago.

The Governor General is really a kind of military position anyway. He/she is the President of the Federal Executive Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force, as well as viceregal representative in the Australian Capital Territory.

I can think of no one I would like better for the job, except maybe CullDav .... joke.

Are you seriously suggesting Australian military personnel are not instructed to kill during wars they articipate in? What -they go over there handing out fruit baskets and flowers? :roflol:
I'm sorry, but I don't recall Australia ever need defending against an invasion or a declaration of war from Korea; Vietnam; or Iraq?

Mindless automatons, who kill on the orders of someone else - just what an advanced civilisation needs. Really haven't stepped that far from the cave have we. :icon_clueless:

I don't like the argument that a war is only a war if the US Constitution says so. Did no wars exist prior to the US Constitution?

Luckily you have advanced far beyond the cave entrance.
If IQ is measured by the ability to survive in a sometimes dangerous world then I would say you are mindless. And if you get your wish and Australia is overrun you would soon see that you would be expected to be an automaton.
So just be happy with the devil you know.

Fortunately for Australia and New Zealand as well....both Nations are covered by the U.S. Military Umbrella....which is massive especially in that part of the world.

I have been on JOBS...in that part of the world and a while back I worked with some Aussies on a few Islands East of Sumatra.

They were all good guy's and capable.

But they were more so than many Australian's keenly aware just how close the U.S. and Australia really is.

    Wow,
I would love to see some of the faces from our right wingers now. I bet you are at least 2 feet up on their imaginary ladder.

Anyway, most often I hold a similar opinion to yours, however to describe the position of the GG as a kind of military one is just my worst nightmare.
I hope you are wrong, and that one day we have a different person holding this position, from a different background.

That has nothing to do with Cosgrove as a private person.....

    Cheerio

I did not advocate the Invasion of Iraq...but I knew that going into Afghanistan was absolutely necessary but NOT to Nation build.

Australia although many Australian's might not believe it....depends on the U.S. Military to prevent China from puling it's usual crap.

Besides your rantings, they ARE mindless automatons -told when, where and who to indiscriminatley kill. Maybe you should be asking yourself, under what circumstances, and for what genuine reasons ARE they acting like mindless automatons? I don't believe at the end of the day, by saying I was told to do it, is going to be a good enough excuse or answer somehow... I wouldn't want it on my conscience!! Killing someone I didn't know over a piece of land, because a politician told me to do it...

Why was it a war??? Because it suites your agenda.
    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/disparage
You might not think I know what disparage means but it is obvious you don't, so perhaps we should use an alternative term you might understand. "Perhaps you should look up these things before trying to belittle people’s efforts" which is exactly what you were doing.

You think calling Vietnam War a war and East Timor a peacekeeping operation is disparaging Cosgrove?

The Vietnam War was a war because it was national actors engaged in warfare against each other. Believe it or not but wars existed before the signing of the US Constitution.

True matters naught whether this nor that was considered a war. BUT when a person wants to disparage (or in case you did not know "belittle) ones effort they wish to defend their comment by categorizing military actions as to being war and not at their OWN belief, then this comment (obviously showing that racist quality) is totally irrelevant. After all as you consider me not Australian and the person who is making the claims is Australian, would that mean this comment is wrong???

Considering how Australia treats its Vietnam vets, I would consider this to be extremely naive.

So before interjecting with your racial prejudice perhaps you should consider what you are defending...
The most relevant part of the comment, BUT do you know what he has achieved outside military service??? Even if you don't, who would you have rather seen in the position???

No, I don’t think your straw-man effort is disparaging Cosgrove.
I think this comment is disparaging(or belittling) Cosgrove. Your defense of this disparaging comment is classifications of military action is nothing but straw-man.

Again as stated before and to another, When it suites your agenda it is a war. BUT when the rest of Australia and the world agree upon the classification as NOT being a war, then I would suggest your wrong.

However, that does not detract from the fact your comment was aimed at disparaging the efforts of Cosgrove as being nothing but a highly decorated soldier from Vietnam. Again, for the umpteenth time, LOOK IT UP YOURSELF. It is pretty disgusting that anybody would simply throw out disparaging comments in ignorance and then attempt to defend such, without making the smallest effort to find out themselves.

You are reaching so far up your arse classifying that as disparaging that the tickle you feel in your throat is your own hand.

    - - - Updated - - -

It's called the Vietnam War, Einstein. That should clue you in.

    - - - Updated - - -

I made no comment on the efforts of Cosgrove. Are you English Second Language?

The only war he served in was the Vietnam War. That's a fact. That's not disparaging him. You are disparaging him by making up (*)(*)(*)(*).

Oh, diddums’... You have been caught out and have nothing but insult to justify your straw-man efforts and disparaging comments... talk about desperate... :roflol: :roflol: :roflol:

Here is something that clues you in, Matter naught what it is called but what is accepted. Again, if it suites your agenda it is what you want to make it. Still a straw-man effort to defend a disgusting effort to disparage (or belittle for those intellectually challenged) somebody, just because you don't agree with the government at present.

Everybody calls it the Vietnam War.

It was 2 nations at war with one another.

The only people who won't accept it was a war are Americans because they think their constitution determines if something is a war or not. It doesn't.

Funny how you want the Vietnam War to be a conflict and the East Timor peacekeeping mission to be a war.

As illustrated, your comments are attempted to disparage Cosgrove and his efforts. By trying to say he has only done this or that is excluding any other efforts. The fact you want to ignore his other military and private efforts to attempt to say this person is not worthy of such a position IS disparaging. AS I continue to state LOOK HIM UP, but NOOO let us build straw-men and try to make little straw-castles to defend such comments. NOW it is I am fabricating information that the slightest (for the classification of the challenged SMALLEST) search could be found.

FFS WIKI, as a source... Jesus even the most challenged can tell you that it takes no genius to see what little effort it takes to find out what you are trying to ignore about this man.

Got anything substantial to add or you just want to support the challenged with a straw-man effort to defend disparaging comments???

So you continue to build your little straw castles to hide your little straw-men in. Your only defense of disparaging comments is classifications of what is constituted as war and what is not.

I find it funny how not once you have made any recognition of what this persons efforts, you simply want to disparage the one military action over another. YES, that is disparaging, or belittle, as it matter naught what classification a military action is. As both have unique challenges. BUT here you attempt to defend such disparagement with classifications. WHY??? Simply because you disagree with the government of the day. Why don't you attack the government??? Is it because you simply want to disparage anything they do to support your own political agenda???

At least the racist CAT has the honesty to say they prefer this person was not selected but NOOO you have to disparage the person to support your stance... Is it any wonder that Australians are considered to be the jokes of the world when they disparage people the rest of the world hold in high regards???

Yes we are fortunate to have the protection of yous guys. It hurts but that's the way it is.
From what you said it sounds like we're getting closer. It would be good if we could keep our cultural heritage even so. Our lefties are no help at all.
