I heard about this yesterday and laughed so hard I cried. Old age and treachery has overcome youth and skill once again.

Aside from birthdates in the SS system, the Musk rat and his baby coders have plans to update, or streamline, the computer systems at all of our agencies and departments. But Musk has no COBOL coders. It's an old business programming language developed in the 1950s. His little boy hackers can't hack it. (heh heh)

Hey, Elon, baby! Need help? Because this old bag of bones knows how to code in COBOL. I've taught COBOL. Make me a very generous offer, and I'll teach your little [edited] buddies.

At this point, one can't believe anything Musk and his DOGE gang are reporting. They already lied too much and are 100% careless to have any credibility left. Not that they had any to begin with, since this was a propaganda operation from the start. It won't make any difference, though, since the damage is already done. They won't stop until they have destroyed everything. And MAGA cheers.

My eyes see words, my mind reads screaming at the sky.

If Trump saved a leftist's entire family from the cannibals that got Biden's uncle, those leftists would still scream at the sky.

    Another MAGA response for ya...
are we to assume a man who is a billionaire and has multiple companies... can drop a rocket booster from miles in the sky to the grasp of "Mechazilla"
but can't hire a cobol programmer, (or the new lingo) "coder"... is this really what this is about?

    Trump chose musk because

He wants to do it (a fun project)

Has the motivation to do it (less red tape for manufacturing)

Has the means to do it (intelligence and networking)

And has the track record to do it (successful, world's richest man due to his ability to create efficient processes)

Finally, he has the right personality to do it (Will push through no matter what). I'm a bit iffy on this one because good programs are getting canned. But at the end of the day that's the Trump admin's decision. Musk is simply looking and advising.

I've decided to ignore the conspiracy theories for now and see what he can get done. (Also, frankly all of the previous Democrat presidents and administrations had externally appointed czars. Doing exactly the same sort of stuff that Musk is doing. I'm not saying that they were crooks but certainly they weren't the most non-corrupt people in the world. And there's no way that they will operating with such transparency).

It will be interesting to see if other countries around the world pick up if they are successful. There's certainly a whole bunch of red crappy tape in Australia. Just doing your tax return is a nightmare. They add rules but they never take them away. Our deficit is blossoming of late. Nobody ever tackles this.

What did musk do, fire the old timers before figuring out how the old COBOL systems work? Been a couple of decades since I did anything with COBOL

    Huh?

I must be losing it. That's the second comment that makes no sense, and I'm only on the second one! What does my news have to do with a constitutional crisis? I mentioned no such thing.

Seriously, where did that come from? And who or what is Huff & Puff?

Would the MIT bulletin do? Oh, wait ... that uses a lot of really big words, and talks more about the Musk rat's mission to update and streamline all of our government's systems, but needing COBOL programmers for the task. That amuses me because he's such a smug bustard, and thinks he's smart, yet he didn't see this coming.

The people who maintained the SS administration's system were among the first to be fired. Bad planning.

Things like this make me almost believe in karma. I laughed so hard, I cried.

Wow. It sounds like you drank the kool-aid. Say it ain't so!

As for that bit, where are you getting your info? Because virtually everything I see, hear, or read about Musk's activities makes that statement pure bee ess. Do you actually believe that's all Musk is doing?

How secure is what? COBOL was designed to process large, batch-based business information and provide reports formatted as the COBOL program dictates. It was not designed to provide system security.

Security in any computerized system is a completely separate entity than the data being processed. System security software is usually a purchased package these days. I've no idea what our government uses. The more recently created agencies, like Homeland Security, may have more up-to-date software.

What the Musk rat plans is to streamline the way our various agencies process data, which is a good goal, but most of our data processing uses COBOL, and the first people Musk rat fired were the IT people. His teen hackers are at a complete loss, and Musk was too dumb to see it coming.

That is what's been making me chuckle and smile all day. Mr. High and Mighty, and his co-president Donald Trump, are now dealing with their failure to think things through. That's what you get when you don't plan adequately.

Regarding my use of the unkind nickname of Musk rat: I hate that sort of thing. I try never to use them and have even scolded a few for going a bit over the top, but I'm making an exception. Musk is a rat.

Yep. Myopic of him, right? Most of us ancient COBOL dinosaurs are retired. Like myself. I've not used COBOL since the 80s, when I was teaching it.
