Like my quotes said, the jury requested that the college pay the bakeries legal fees, although the judge has the final say on that. Considering that the bakery wanted to settle pre-trial and that both Oberlin and their insurance company had no interest in doing so, I'd say the judge will likely side with the jury on this one. We shall see. Oberlin admins were as dumb as a box of Paris Hilton's on this one; I have no problem with them paying for it. Maybe I would feel otherwise if they were contrite, repentant, and honestly asking for forgiveness - but I see little hope for that.

Y'know what I just noticed? All the board liberals seem to have vanished from this thread. I wonder why?

I get called a liberal on just about a daily basis here — or socialist depending on the poster. I’m still here. And I think this case is wonderful!

I hear ya, man. I get called a Trump supporter all the time even though I've often said the guy was NOT someone I wanted to vote and had it been ANYONE but Hillary on the Dem side, I'd likely have voted for that person over Trump.

But we do have a lot of binary thinkers here.

Yes, us middle of the road people are looked upon as an exotic zoo creature the left and the right have never seen before. I’m glad I don’t listen to what people call me here, I would have a personality disorder by now lol.

In my opinion the democrats own trump more than the republicans because they ignore the will of their primary voters. All the more reason we need a viable third party — I hate having to vote for who I hate the least vs who I like the most.

Elections are binary in the US, only the D and R candidates matter, generally speaking.

If not for Ron Paul running i would have voted for Obama over McCain but i've been called a racist since.. Makes you scratch your head...... Back then they hated McCain even challenged his right to be President ( sound familiar?)

Now you are called a traitor for not supporting the guy they hated...

The writers at Salon, Vox, addictinginfo, Think Progress etc etc have it easy knowing their base has no damn memory.

"HIGHER" EDUCATION GETTING IT'S JUST DESSERTS: Oberlin ordered to pay $6.5 million in attorney’s fees and expenses to bakery it defamed.

When Oberlin College told alumni that it could afford to pay the $25 million reduced judgment for libel and retaliation against Gibson’s Bakery, the court had yet to approve the attorney’s fees and expenses that Oberlin would be required to pay the Gibson’s plaintiffs.

That award came down Wednesday: another $6.5 million, more than twice as much as Oberlin argued was “reasonable.”

Oberlin’s Effort To Fight Judgment Backfires Bigtime.

Oberlin College in Ohio has asked for a stay of execution after a judge ruled in favor of a local bakery that sued the school for defamation.

But the college's request to delay paying the $25 million judgment backfired when the judge granted the request on the condition that the college post bond in the amount of the original judgment, plus an additional $11 million.

Very simply, you want a delay paying the $25M, fine, immediately post a bond for $36M!

Oberlin is not catching on that we are all fed up with their harmful racial incitement antics where they seem to think every white person who is not part of their political coalition is fair game for slander abuse and as much economic harm as they can inflict.

Great GREAT news! I think I should get some of the $32M for all the support showed and for buying some pastries on line in their hour of need. I would use the money to fight racism. And to buy pastries.

Some of these smaller colleges are having to close due to high fees and declining enrollment. I don't know about Oberlin, but this can't help.

Punitive damages may not be covered as that is deliberate bad behavior, not an "accident" as insurance is generally designed to cover. This will depend on the state and the policy language.

CHALK ON UP FOR THE GOOD GUYS: Gibson’s Bakery v. Oberlin College: The Warning to Wokesters. “It thus looks pretty likely that with accumulated postjudgment interest, Oberlin will have to fork over in excess of $34 million to the Gibson family. This is on top of the millions Oberlin has spent on attorneys fees, and millions more that the negative publicity has and will likely cost Oberlin. The eight-figure disaster should serve as a timely object lesson to universities and administrators: surrendering to wokeism and cancel culture (in Oberlin’s case, embracing and participating in it) can have very real, very expensive repercussions.”

The systematic violation of the rights of others is fundamentally unjust and should cost the perpetrator dearly.
And that would be a good thing.

Nope - still here. And I think the whole thing is ridiculous. Protesting because students were caught shoplifting? It sounds like they were just looking for an excuse. And the College's admin getting involved? Also ridiculous. Where I come from, shoplifters are held accountable - not turned into heroes.

I do, however, think the judgment is a little high. And if it results in repercussions for the town financially, it's irresponsible.

Oberlin College hasn't paid Gibson's Bakery the $31 million it owes (plus more than $4 million in interest)

    Interest is $4,300 daily.

    Get Woke!
    Go Broke!

"All of this started with a bit of shoplifting back in 2016. A black student tried to steal a bottle of wine and was chased out of the store. Two of his female friends then got into a physical fight with one of the owners. That’s what police saw when they arrived. The shoplifters eventually pleaded guilty to minor charges but a group of students launched a protest and accused the bakery of racism. The school sided with the students and members of the administration even joined the protests. In particular, Oberlin vice president and dean of students Meredith Raimondo handed out fliers during the protest that accused the school of being racist. After a lengthy court battle Gibson’s Bakery won the initial $44 million judgment which the school has been fighting ever since."

    Has Meredith Raimondo been fired?

"Meredith Raimondo left Oberlin last October “to begin her role as vice president for student affairs at Oglethorpe University.” She was originally scheduled to take a sabbatical and then return to Oberlin this fall but something changed."

    I'll say.

You mean you can't just get away with stealing and blaming it on racism anymore when you get caught?

What's the world coming to when you can't use your privilege card?
