Is old school (alternative) medicine still of value these days or have the modern medicines made a full-blown hostile take over of the health industry? Considering the fact that modern medicines (manufacturers) are in it for profit and that they have mimicked natural compounds by synthesising them so the drugs can be patented. So if the industry is about profit, what does that say about the care/health of the patient? When most drugs only mask the symptoms. Then the other side of the coin is, are the alternative medicines any better? If modern medicine stole/mimicked nature, shouldn't that part of the pharmaceutical industry be called 'alternative'? What are your perspectives, views and opinions?
I make a tincture of London dry gin and golden raisins. Eat 8-10 of those gin-raisins a day. It's a fairly common home remedy for arthritis in my neighborhood and better than Celebrex some claim. It works, though I have no idea how, and I can tell the difference if I skip a day or two. It's got to be golden raisins, regular purple raisins won't work.
I will use natural remedies as the front line, and also for preventative measures. Only when an alternative measure is found ineffective (by my judgement) will I seek pharmaceuticals. Some synthetic compounds I have found to not only be less effective, but will complicate other existing conditions.
I agree. Through my own experiences, they do more harm than good. When taken in the short-term modern/western meds may be alright, but when it becomes long-term or life long it creates other problems. Then you end up being prescribed more meds to combat the effects of the previous. When done correctly and in the right quantities and frequency, old-school medicines work a treat. I make a smoothie every second day during the week I had researched the ingredients that go into it, from herbs and spices to fruits and veggies that combat things such as inflammation, blood sugar control, immune system boost, etc...
I used to get sinus infections pretty regular. Maybe twice a year. Now I have learned, by accident, that if I take a toot* or two of tobacco snuff when my ears start gurgling it usually clears up by the next day. I know how that one works. Nicotine is ridiculously poisonous to darn near everything, including you and me. I don't use it regularly. It doesn't take much. I got half a 1/2oz. can of Garrett's left that I think I bought in about 2010. edit- * that's up the nose.
Have you ever tried chilli? Not snort it, but have it with your food. I love my hot and spicy when I include that with meals I make sure I have some tissues handy. As it opens the sinus flood gates.
I'm a Type 1 diabetic, so I have a wee bit of reliance on insulin. On the occasion that I visit a doctor, they are always surprised that I don't have any of the fun stuff like high BP, cholesterol, take statins or have heart issues. Other issues have come up over the years, all also autoimmune driven. So keeping my immune system tuned is paramount.
I'm similar. I had a stroke when I was 36, that was 18 years ago. I was put on statins and blood thinners, after about 10 years of taking that crap I did my research on it the statins in particular and found they're really bad for your health. I looked at natural substitutes (which I include in the smoothie) and changed my diet dramatically. I've recently had blood tests and my GP had nothing to say about my cholesterol. So, if that's the case, all is good then.
My grandmother is Hungarian. I don't remember eating a meal that didn't have something seasoned with pakrika or wax peppers until I was 18. Yep, pepper can make the nose go. Makes you sweat first if you eat it strong enough.
Haha, my parents were Hungarian. My dad used to make a very hot (spicy) fish soup. I've since made my adaptation and made a chicken, veggies and pasta soup that is also very hot. Great meal in winter, one that gets the fluids flowing from the sinuses.
