It's a little more complicated. The Zionists started an attack on the British - even murdering a ton of Jews who wanted to leave Palestine. However, the British could not do to the Israeli's what they did to the Palestinians in 37. Too many people were watching and slaughtering Jews wasn't going to go well in the press like slaughtering Palestinians did. As a result, the British even allowed the Israeli's to begin their ethnic cleansing operation before they left. The British were definitely complicit in the whole affair by the end.
