A complaint from a parent at a Florida school has resulted in a number of books being restricted. Included is a poem by Amanda Gorman called "The Hill We Climb". Ms. Gorman read this poem at President Biden's inauguration.

The complaint states that this poem (and the other books in the complaint) were "not educational" and contained indirect "hate messages." Overall, her objections to the five contested books revolved around concerns of "indoctrination" and "critical race theory."

Later it was shown that this same parent's Facebook profile, found using personal details included in her complaint, featured a slew of right-wing posts, including one from August 21, 2021, voicing support for the Proud Boys and referencing a QAnon conspiracy theory. A separate, now-deleted March 31 post shared a summary of "Protocols of the Elders of Zion," a century-old antisemitic conspiracy theory.

In a statement the parent said that "I would like to apologize to the Jewish community for a post that I reposted earlier from someone else. I only read the word communism and went ahead to repost it thinking it was related to that."

So, this parent, who admits to posting things without actually reading them, was able to restrict access to school books because of her claims about "hate messages" but we have no evidence that she actually read the books in question.

I saw a meme that reportedly had Gorman's response but I can't find it, so even if she didn't say it, it still holds true.

In this country one parent can stop children from reading certain books but as a nation we can't stop guns from massacring them.

We can’t stop anything from happening completely, but we can limit it. But Dems strict focus on getting rid of the 2nd amendment prevents any progress.

As far as this parent. Who cares.

Again, we are the only industrialized country that has this problem. Why? What should be done then? What progress is being stopped?

No we aren’t. You have no idea what you’re talking about lol. Nor do I suspect you’re actually interested in finding a solution. Just more irrational gun hating from the left.

It was a book of poems, not a single poem.

Them being a Proud Boys supporter should basically invalidate whatever complaints they have, as they don't have any room to talk about anyone. They also should make a better effort to read the whole thing and not just take the title or one sentence and run with it.

In 2022 there were 51 school shootings resulting in 40 people dead (32 children, 8 adults) and another 100 people injured.

Show me another industrialized nation that has numbers even approaching this.

From Jan 2009 to May 2018 the top 10 countries with school shootings are:

    United States - 288

Want to guess #2? How many?

    Mexico - 8

EIGHT! That's in second to our 288! So don't tell me we aren't the only country with this problem.

    So what?

I don't care if it was a book of Penthouse forum letters...No child has ever been killed by a book and yet the Republicans are hell bent on getting books out of schools and don't want to do a damn thing to get guns out of our schools. In fact the Republican "solution" to guns in schools is to PUT MORE GUNS IN SCHOOLS!.

Really? Republicans haven't floated the idea of arming teachers? Putting more security guards in schools?
Isn't the Republican mantra "All it takes to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun"?

If my choice is to have porn in schools or guns in schools I'm going with the porn every single time.

The Democrats, some, are intent on making him into their newest boogieman and they ONLY care about this issue because they see DeSantis as a viable threat to their keeping power in 2024. Nobody in their right mind would want their child to access porn while at school. Oh, but Ron DeSantis bad man. That's all this is. Another cheap trick to diminish his chances for the WH.

You've deceptively stereotyped Republicans. Not surprised that you won't admit that Republicans do not want to ban books and not all Republicans are for more guns at school.

    No, its not about that.

    1. Porn is subjective
    2. Right wing religious zealots should not be able to define “porn”
    3. Ron DeSantis is literally/verifiably weaponizing government against free speech and against his political opponents

The right in this country is literally making things out of whole cloth to rile up the base. Everything today is “grooming” and trans phobia, all stoked by made up stories and lies. The right has been screaming about Biden “weaponizing the government”, claiming he is using the power of government against private business and blah blah blah……yet Ron DeSantis is literally doing that to Disney today, because he made up claims that Disney was trying to make kids gay. DeSantis went after Disney with the full power of the state goverment because they support gay rights.

The right now has a war on gay people, claiming they are “grooming” every kid to be gay (like its a choice), and that gay = pedophile. They claim that gay people somehow sexualize children by default, yet somehow overlook children’s beauty pageants like the one below are just good Christian fun for conservatives:

Why bother, if you can have success in getting something banned only because it was written and performed by a black woman at the inauguration of the Anti-Christ?

The poem reads like an American POW was indoctrinated by the enemy and made a recorded message condemning America. Such a hopeful poem.

It comes off better if you read it for yourself instead of having Miami Rose interpret it for you.

Frankly, I had never read the thing until I saw this continued effort at banning things... I missed that part of the inauguration...

Absolutely nothing in there that warrants a ban, until you get pissed at the Trump reference - "a force that would shatter the nation"

Thanks for the info. Sadly, for American conservative these numbers mean nothing. They think a ‘Book of Poem” is threat to society then AR-15.
