Philadelphia police detective abused position to coerce sex from male witnesses and informants

He abused his position to stalk and intimidate males into having sex with him, compelling them to submit to sexual abuse. Sometimes he displayed his firearm.

The meetings took place in hotel rooms, interview rooms and police vehicles.

Philip Nordo was sentenced to between 24.5 and 49 years in prison.

Former Philly detective sentenced to decades in rape case | AP News - December 2022

Imagine you're a young black male, terrified of police, and this detective gets you alone in a room and then threatens to make sure you go to prison if you don't do what he wants you to do. Meanwhile he's a big guy and there's no way to take him down, and you know no one is going to be likely to believe you over him.

Imagine you're a young white male in the same position. What's race got to do with it?

Philadelphia is mostly a black area, especially in the neighborhoods where police are most active, and especially when looking at the younger demographic (between the ages of 16 and 29). When you're talking about witnesses and informants connected to a crime, in that area, statistically they are most likely going to be black.
I think race does have something to do with it, because people are going to be less likely to believe the claims of a young black male if he is accusing an older police detective of something in response to the detective accusing him. All the more so if the detective knew that person had a prior arrest for drug use, something that is extremely common in that area.

Philadelphia is a mostly black area you say? Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep that in mind when making my vacation plans.

The article does not say the race of the victims, but I believe that can be strongly inferred given the context of the story and the city. Probably the majority of them were black.
To protect the confidentiality of the victims, they're obviously not releasing names or pictures.

The police detective was an overweight middle aged white man.

What a pile load crap. Maybe you may not believe someone based on race but I wouldn’t care if their white or black. My opinion would be based on the individual not their race.

And plus the guy is in jail and been convicted so what do you mean people don’t believe them? The fact you tried to turn this into a race issue is pathetic

My point wasn't to try to hold this up as another example of oppression on blacks by whites. Rather it was to say that the perpetrator was a pervert with a disgusting sexual penchant who took advantage of downcast persons in society in a very vulnerable position.
The interracial aspect only adds to the depravity.

A 2014 study led by Stinson analyzed the arrests of nearly 400 officers, employed across 43 states and Washington, D.C., for sex-related crimes between 2005 and 2007--just three years. Beyond uncovering 118 cases of rape, the study found that nearly three-quarters of all the cases involved victims who were younger than 18.

"These findings seem to indicate scenarios in which adults allowed police both access and the opportunity to victimize children under their care,” the study states. “That is, caregivers may be prone to 'let their guard down' in the presence of police in a manner that evokes the infamous scandals involving Catholic priests and the wide-scale sexual abuse of minors."

Just last week, a New Jersey police officer was arrested on accusations that he'd sexually assaulted a teenaged relative multiple times between May 2019 and April 2021, starting when she was just 14. Last month, a Massachusetts cop was convicted for sexually assaulting a child younger than 14. In April, an Oklahoma man pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a child. At the time of the abuse in 2019, he, too, was a police officer.

Cops so often abuse 14-year-olds, in particular, Stinson said, that he'll sometimes hear one of his research assistants mutter under their breath, "Oh my god, another 14-year-old."

I'm guessing 14 is like the "sweet spot". Old enough to start being attractive in a sexual way but young and small enough not to easily be able to defend themselves. (I say this in the most cynical way possible) So sad.

It’s the other way around, statistically.
