Do such firearms, devoid of a fixed or folding buttstock, and possessing nothing more than a pistol-shaped grip at the rear, have any practical purposes or applications? Can they be used to any degree of effectiveness, or are they merely a gimmick for the works of fiction produced in Hollywood?

I've never shot one, but I can't imagine that they can be as easy to aim and shoot as a stocked shotgun.

I can say I don't really care for a pistol grip on a shotgun.

That said, it depends where the safety mechanism is.

If it's a tang safety, I don't want a pistol grip. If it's a button safety, I might want a pistol grip depending on a few other things.

I have used pistol grip only guns.
The rub is, with B.A.T.F.E. I somewhat like how they keep adding letters.... lol
If it came from the factory with a pistol grip only, it is not considered a shotgun or a
    rifle !

It now must have a 25 1/4 overall length, so it can now sport a 14 inch barrel, the Raptor pistol grip gives it enough overall length.

2 shotguns lend themselves to this configuration, Remington's tactical pistol grip model 870 pump shotgun with a removable magazine extension total 6 shots extended from 4 shots.
And you add a 14 inch barrel, it is a non N.F.A. short barrel.

Mossberg 500, pistol grip only, add Raptor grip, and buy a 4 shot magazine capacity or a kit to with a 4 shot tube and a 14 inch barrel.

Hints; use a 25 inch length barrel length, if you are cutting down an 18 1/2 inch standard length barrel.

Carry a B.A.T.F. Letter with the decision and classification by B.A.T.F.E. as you would if it were a SBS.

I have much experience with short barreled pistol grip shotguns and will say this, you need to work with them and loads to be effective with them, I had to devote much time to shotguns in general as for some odd reasons, I have always had to aim my shotguns.

Start with low power loads and work up.
I always start with 2 3/4 inch low brass and work my way up.

I think the above is only legal if it has never been a shotgun or a pistol. I think you have to buy it from the factory--i.e. the Mossberg Shockwave or Remington 870-Tac-14, otherwise you are considered to be making a gun.

In my humble experiences, I have used 3 pistol grip models, the Winchester 1300 model with a 24 inch barrel in Police work.

    Remington 870 Pump,
Mossberg 500, both 4 shot magazine tubes, and a 14 inch barrel,
Now B.A.T.F.E. requires an overall 25 1/2 inch length if it is not an NFA firearm, and is NOT to be used as a concealed firearm, or it is classified as an N.F.A. firearm.

Anyway, for technical use, such shotguns are of great utility, ease of use and practical reasons.

Legally, you are better off buying a Tax Stamp from B.A.T.F.E. and making your own and get "Married" Legally, rather than just live together, with your shotgun.

This way you can legally carry it concealed too.

I like the Mossi better. Ever break an ejector on an 870? Pain in the ass.

    Read please.

It must come from the factory as a pistol grip only !!!!!

It will say so on the box, it will be transferred to you as a pistol grip only, it can't be a combination pistol grip and stock.

To use the short 14 inch barrel you must use a Raptor or other grip so as to maintain a 25 1/2 inch overall length to be on the safe side of matters.

B.A.T.F.E. already defined this firearm, the only making is if you decide to go another route that shortens the overall length to less than 25 1/2 inches, making in subject to a $200 Tax and classified as a short barreled shotgun and can use any stock, grip or practical barrel length.

Then why in the world were you mentioning cutting the barrel down?

Don't listen to me then, I have never had one break, of ejector, which is unlikely, or EXTRACTOR, which is what you likely meant.

You must be lucky in Love, and cards,
    lol

WTF do I know about anything any way ?

I am only 54 years old and used the Remington 870 extensively for about 40 years now without one breakage, hard used Police issue shotguns mostly, the Civilian ones were well beaten too.
Like Dogs carried them in their mouths.

And even if you never speak to me again, UGH ! It is not Mossi, it is not Shotty, it is Mossberg.
Not Remmy either, that is sooooo Ghetto.
I apologize for how I feel, being plain spoken, a fault of mine.

I never use the safety on a shotgun, safety off, and chamber empty, I pump when needed, and if I am not shooting a bad guy, I shuck in another cartridge, I don't use a side saddle, I carry extra cartridges in (a) pocket(s)...

I know that sounds very uhm, Very Happy, if you get My little pun, however, it is what I do, nobody needs agree.

I agree. I had a 500 with a folding stock. The only value folded to me was it was easier to store in the trunk of my car, or a BUG shotgun, but I never saw an application for using it folded using just the grip that I didn’t already have covered.
Personally, in a CQB situation, I’d prefer my HK45c or my G19, even my G26. But perhaps I haven't seen the right application need. Even in Bear country, I have better options.
Looks scary though... never misses for actors and the short ones seem to have one of those bottomless mags I can never find on the market, even at gun shows LOL.

Because when you buy a pistol grip only shotgun, that is not really a shotgun according to B.A.T.F.E. It will come with an 18 1/2 inch barrel and if you want to use a 14 inch barrel, you must swap out the stock pistol grip to a Raptor or other exact length grip so that the entire length of the firearm is 25 1/2 inches in order for it to be a legal Non N.F.A. Firearm.

    I hate a folding stock.

I use a pistol grip with only one porpoise, lol
    Purpose,
A joke from Through the looking glass / Alice in Wonderland.

As a purely Defensive or as British say, Offensive Shotgun, with as short a barrel as allowed by law, 14 inch is Best.
It is not, at least for me, so easy a thing, it takes lots of practice and work, do you can learn how it aims and patterns, you can go full custom on the barrel and have it back bored and choked for shot, I.C. always worked for Me or Cyl is adequate too.

The shotgun is an adjunct to handguns in combat as you most of the time will not be able to re-load unless you have cover, and maybe not even then.

I go by experience and I remember qualifying with pump shotguns, and they do let you re-load, old Walter used to have a working Police Lightbar set up on the range and would jostle me as I was re-loading, at first I wanted to smack him, then I saw the value of it later on.

No I meant ejector. They're riveted in on the 870s.

Sorry if saying Mossi bothers you ;)

I also say Block a lot.

Again, you are talking about conversions. My understanding is that the ONLY way to have one of these shotguns is to buy it in the correct configuration as built by the factory. You cannot convert an existing shotgun into one.

You can't convert it if it has, a rifle type stock, or has one included in the box, it must be PISTOL grip only, and say so on the box.
Overall length 25 1/2 inches, barrel can then be 14 inches, around a tish longer than the 4 round capacity magazine tube.

It has to have the 14 inch barrel and never have had a 18 inch barrel to be legal.

    Wrong.

We have cautioned many others against adding to things.

    http://shockwavetechnologies.com/site/?page_id=88

I was wrong on the overall length, it is 26 1/2 inches, overall length, read the B.A.T.F.E. letters.

This is how stupid our gun laws are.

Half an inch too short and it's a 10 year felony.

    Otherwise, happy trails.

    So dumb.

You can read can't you ?

    Read the B.A.T.F.E. LGBTQ Letters.

    Another linky

    http://www.mossberg.com/category/series/590-shockwave/

It is NOT what I say, it is what B.A.T.F.E.
says and Mossberg, if they do not clasify it as an A.O.W. or an S.B.S. and you do not have to pay a Tax on it, as long as it came in a labeled box, you are good to go with a 14 inch barrel and this is a link to a stock factory version with a 14 inch barrel.

    Googled that, they don't exist.

Regardless of any of that, I'm not going to take a pistol gripped shotgun and cut the barrel down and not fear legal consequences. If I had need for that, I'd buy a Shockwave or a TAC-14.
