States should be represented by the Senate and they are — they should not be represented by the House and the Presidency which is what is happening today as the House has been locked at an arbitrary number diluting the voice of the people and the Presidency has followed suit.

That’s the way it is now. It’s not the way the Founders designed it.

Nothing like that is mentioned in Federalist 68. The main justification for the EC was to insulate the office of the president from a glib conman of low moral’s from smooth talking the populous and winning. The EC was designed and implemented to ensure educated electors would choose the “highest magistrate”.

Democracy looks like a prez being elected by the popular vote.

The Founders came up with a great concept but were not omniscient. One of their mistakes was the now anachronistic concessions they made to less populated states of the time in order to get the Constitution ratified and the country's government established. Much of what they set in motion has stood the test of time. The EC has not. Nor has the disproportionate composition of the Senate favoring states with small populations but that's a subject for another day.

That isn't how our system is set up. Each state has X-nunber of votes and the presidential candidate who gets those votes is decided by the popular vote of each state. i.e. democracy

The states don't have the authority to go against the popular vote of the people of that state. That isn't democracy.

    You don't want democracy.

We usually disagree. No change there.

Read Federalist 68, it’s plain and simple.

The essay explains who the electors should be and how they should do their job. The purpose of the EC was to put states on a relatively equal footing. Opinions describing the details of the EC don't change the original purpose.

I fully understand how it is set up. What I'm advocating for is a truly small "d" democratic presidential election. One that reflects the desire of a majority of Americans. The kind of thing Repubs fear most.

You'll have to forgive me for not holding in high esteem the ruminations of men on the matter of elections during a time when only white, male, landowners were viewed as being worthy to cast a vote for President.

Yes it does. A state legislature can't nullify the popular vote of it's state. Electors can't be mandated by law to ignore the popular vote of their states.

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact will guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Compact ensures that every vote, in every state, will matter in every presidential election. The Compact is a state-based approach that preserves the Electoral College, state control of elections, and the power of the states to control how the President is elected.

The EC isn't preserved if a state's electoral votes go to a candidate that didn't win a majority of votes in that state.
