Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he believes the essence of being a conservative today means recognizing that people’s “God-given rights” are on “loan” to the government.

“The foundation of it is understanding the American project,” DeSantis told Fox News host Mark Levin on Sunday. “Our rights come from God, not the government. The founders rejected the divine right of kings.”

“We have these God-given rights,” he continued. “We loan power to the government under a Constitution to protect those rights.”

While discussing his new book The Courage to be Free, DeSantis explained that his roots of growing up in “eclectic” Florida with a blue-collar family that held Rust Belt values kept him grounded while attending the liberal classrooms of Yale and Harvard.

“It was so different from what I thought was appropriate that I wasn’t influenced by it in terms of it pulling that direction. I rebelled in the other way,” the Republican governor said. “I got through Yale and Harvard and came out more conservative than when I went in.” …

That our rights come from God, not the government is the single most basic fundamental understanding of what it means to be an American. That our rights don’t come from government is non negotiable. We the sovereign citizen put government in place for our benefit. It does not rule over us. I’m glad that he said what he did and that some media covered the news.

I’m grateful to the authors of the Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and federalist papers. Elected and appointed government officials are our public servants. We will not be theirs.

Wow, what a nutter. From a practical stand point how do we know what god has to say on the matter? How do we check if its accurate? Whose god?

So I assume that means he agrees that illegals have all the rights a citizen has right?

The shameless pandering to Christians is just amazing. DeSantis is a lawyer. he should realize the basis of our rights is from the Constitution, not some supernatural being.

I don’t think it’s even possible to miss the point by a wider margin than you just did

I’m not surprised a theocratic fascist would believe this. I guess that’s one of the reasons he’s okay with throwing people in jail for exercising their god given right to vote.

Unless you break the law, right?

Say, what do you call a right that can be taken away from you?

Wow the libs sure do get riled up at the thought of rights being inalienable. Really mucks up your plans to burn the constitution doesn’t it? Bummer

Can you define inalienable? Pretend I’m dumb, if that helps.

Oh, I appreciate the explanation. That’s what I thought it was, but the usage threw me off.

So which rights would you say are given by god and are inalienable? The second amendment?

“Would I say”? Again, they are written down. It’s in the Constitution. My opinion need not apply.
