I wonder whether Putin is working to subvert Alaska, though. No doubt he would love to have that little victory under his belt, and the additional Pacific and Arctic access that it would afford, not to mention holding such a strategically valuable area, and of course it would add to Russia's existing oil wealth as well.

150 Years After Sale of Alaska, Some Russians Have Second Thoughts

    By Evan Gershkovich
    • March 30, 2017
The reassertion of Russia’s greatness has been a motif of Vladimir V. Putin’s presidency, and his projection of military might and cyberpower is in part why Russian-American relations are at their lowest point since the end of the Cold War.

So the 150th anniversary on Thursday of Russia’s sale of Alaska to the United States — an event few Americans may notice — was a day of mourning for some hard-right Russian nationalists who see the transaction as a gigantic blunder by the ailing czarist empire, one that reverberates as the major powers vie for influence over the Arctic and its natural riches in an age of climate change.

“If Russia was in possession of Alaska today, the geopolitical situation in the world would have been different,” Sergey Aksyonov, the prime minister of Crimea, told a Crimean television network this month.

A niche military magazine, Military-Industrial Courier, recently ran a two-part article headlined “The Alaska We’ve Lost,” grumbling about what could have been.

a recent interview with a Russian newspaper. “The anniversary may, of course, trigger diverse emotions,” he said. “But it is a good occasion to refresh memories of Russians’ contribution to exploration of the American continent.”

Mr. Putin, asked about Alaska during a call-in show in 2014, said “we don’t need to get worked up about this.” At the International Arctic Forum in Arkhangelsk, Russia, on Thursday, however, he said that American activities in Alaska could destabilize world order. “What we do is contained locally, while what the U.S. does in Alaska, it does on the global level,” he said, calling the American development of a missile system there “one of the most pressing security issues.”

    -------------------

Perhaps the ongoing "meddling" through information warfare is intended, in part, to give Russia a shot at retaking Alaska eventually, perhaps even as easily and bloodlessly as they took Crimea. If things were to fall apart here in a serious way, who knows? Alaskans might then be ready for the relatively stable rule of Moscow.

Strange, I went on a hunting/fishing trip in Alaska about a year ago and not one single person said, gee I wish I lived in Russia. Like most Americans they look on them with pity. They do love the oil revenues that the government shares with them. That don't happen in Russia. The only thing they share is misery. The purchase shows the superiority of America's leaders. In a peaceful manner and for a bargain price they wave a few dollars in the face of a drunken greedy Russian and purchase a large pact of land. Now the drunk is sobering up and saying I've been hosed. Too bad, too late. I'll bet France feels the same way over the Louisiana Purchase.

Not in that case, that submarine crashed into a seamount that was known and mapped.

But aircraft carriers launch and recover fighter aircraft, which the Kuznetsov does as well. It’s an aircraft carrier no matter what euphemism Russia wants to use.

Unfortunately it isn't very good at the 'recovery' part. Its one and only combat deployment was marred by several crashes and malfunctions that saw its air wing spend a fair bit of time as land based air.

Ahaha. Despite the biggest debt in the history of mankind, you cannot repair toilets. For example, NASA implore the Russian to sell Russian toilets for the ISS to the Americans. :roflol::roflol::roflol:

Grizzly bears are our relatives. We will drink vodka with them, with a play on the balalaika and a dance "Barynya". In other words, we will find a common language with them. Sarah Palin we will leave you.

Of course the Russians have more. Or at least not less. I wonder why you do not compare the cost of paying utilities? Russian in Moscow for a two-room apartment with central heating pay $ 70 per month. This includes payment for current and capital repairs of the house, payment for cleaning the entrance and the territory, payment for gas, heating, electricity, water and sewage, payment for a landline phone and payment for high-speed Internet (100 MB / s), as well as payment for cable TV. Terrestrial television in Russia for free about 40 channels. You can also compare the size of the fine for, for example, road traffic violation. Medicine and education in Russia for free. (no payment for insurance or other forms of payment). I wonder why you are silent about this?

Now about the size of housing. Russia has a cold climate. Therefore, the size of housing takes into account this factor. For example, the average size of housing in Finland or Sweden is even smaller than in Russia. Or compare the average apartment size for example in London and in Moscow. In Moscow, the average apartment is more than in London on about 30%. At least in Russia there are no cities consisting of tents or trailers, as in the United States.

This is your statement. You can even consider him an alien ship on the grounds that he has a crew and there are air ships.

This yacht has a plane. Apparently by your definition, this is no longer a yacht, but an aircraft carrier. Is not it?
There are also many yachts with helicopters, they fall under what definition? Helicopter carrier?

Taht sea mount was labeleld on German charts and i doubt USA doesnt have the same charts that we use.

You must understand that we germans place pretty high pride in our technology and we see it as laughable when something like this happened.

Your article is wrong also, it would have been a shame if the sub sunk. It did not smash head on on a wall but hit a moutain side and did slide next to it.

Dont know how your subs are build but ours have bulkheads and watertight compartments. A head on colission should never compromise any submarine or ship.

That airplane is not a military fighter aircraft, nor does the yacht launch or recover it. It takes off from the water and lands on the water.

Why can't you just admit that you lied when you claimed Russia does not have an aircraft carrier? The Kuznetsov is an aircraft carrier.

    USS San Francisco Investigation Completed

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy announced May 9 the completion of the investigation into the Jan. 8 accident aboard the submarine USS San Francisco (SSN 711) that claimed the life of one Sailor.

San Francisco struck an undersea mountain about 360 miles southeast of its Guam homeport because its leaders and watch teams failed to develop and execute a safe voyage plan, the command investigation into the incident concluded.

"The findings of fact show that San Francisco, while transiting at flank (maximum) speed and submerged to 525 feet, hit a seamount that did not appear on the chart being used for navigation," the 124-page report said of the incident in the vicinity of the Caroline Islands.

"Other charts in San Francisco's possession did, however, clearly display a navigation hazard in the vicinity of the grounding," it said. "San Francisco's navigation team failed to review those charts adequately and transfer pertinent data to the chart being used for navigation, as relevant directives and the ship's own procedures required.

"If San Francisco's leaders and watch teams had complied with requisite procedures and exercised prudent navigation practices, the grounding would most likely have been avoided. Even if not wholly avoided, however, the grounding would not have been as severe and loss of life may have been prevented."... continue -> https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=18257

Thanks for proving my point that your navy acts like amateurs. No german submarine crashed into a sea mount so far.

The worst accident in last 30 years happened last year, when one of our submarines lost a propeller blade and had to do an emergency surfaceing.
