why do you think its ok for Muslims to treat women like second-class citizens? or worse, like slaves and cattle? if this was being done to Jews, or blacks, there would be international sanctions, and rightly so.
The Saudis were involved. Here, connect the dots... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6LlagXN5NE Rep. Walter Jones is alluding to the Saudis here. I would bet not many even know of this. It would be an embarrassment to the Bush family, who have had long ties with the Saudis. And those 28 redacted pages in the 9-11 report probably back up what this guy said, that many here are contesting. Those that are taking up for the Saudis need a hard reality check. As far as I know, nothing has come of what Rep. Jones is talking about. Obama has not released those pages. It's a white wash.
yes, women are treated like equal citizens in KSA. its just Zionist propaganda that says differently.
Saudi women are a trip.. they are funny, glamorous, educated, speak a couple of languages.. own and manages businesses.. They help their sisters.. and they make up 61 percent of university students. Plus, they are charming rather than loud and abrasive... I like them very much..
Slavery is a more accurate description. Male guardian | Women's rights in Saudi Arabia | Wikipedia.org
Not really.. Women have a great deal of power when it comes to politics, money, home and family. Od course there are men in every culture who are controlling or abusive.. ( notice some of or posters here on PF) I was asked about women's rights in a press conference in Riyadh .. My answer was that it was none of our business because the Saudi men and women are very capable of sorting out their approach to modernity.. and they will. I am just not about dictating changes for other cultures and traditions.
I have a great idea!!! let's apply all rules that apply to women in Saudi Arabia, to all Muslims in the USA, Britain and Canada. it will be about modesty and customs. I wonder how the reaction will be.
hey, if the Muslims don't like it, they can leave, right? just as women can leave KSA if they don't like the rules.
Many Saudi women own import- export businesses and have for a hundred years or more. The ones I know personally travel to purchase fashion, home goods, furniture.. One of my mother's friends imported rice and fabrics.. You might try living in Arabia before you make such exaggerated statements.
what's wrong with Britain, Canada, or the USA imposing KSA-style restrictions on all Muslims? if its ok in KSA, its ok in other countries, right?
This is interesting. I take it you live in Saudi Arabia and that's all well and good but you and I both know that two people living in same country or even the same household can have completely different experiences and perspectives about their culture or country. How would I go about attempting to validate your claims about the Saudi culture and it's treatment of women? You say most of them can come and go, get an education and run a business but some other Saudi resident might present a different picture. I can't validate the truth of your statements nor can I validate how well your own experience accurately represents the culture. It just isn't possible.
You might look up the activities of the al Nahda Society and what projects they support... such as continuing education for women, cripple children's services, historic preservation .... I am a WASP and not currently living in Arabia... but I stay in touch and read Aba newspapers several times a week.
You are acting spiteful here as if you are opposed to modesty in men and women... It would be like forbidding a Jewish person from wearing a yamaka. My extended family value modesty and courtesy.. and we are Christian, Atheist and Jew......
Now that gets us away from your personal perspective as an ex-resident and returns us to the mode of consulting various reports and documents. There are plenty of links provided in this thread documenting what is happening over there. You have dismissed the ones that you don't like because it paints the culture in a negative light but, again, how do I know I can trust your judgment or your motives? I simply don't know you.
According to the articles we cited, they may only do those things with their guardians' permission. That sucks no matter how you try to dress it up.
I spent two decades over there and return as often as possible.. My brothers do as well.. and I still have many American friends in country. Some Arabs hate the Saudis and Kuwaitis because they have invested oil revenues in healthcare, education, clean water, recharge dams and all manner of infrastructure The SAG is absolutely committed to the future economic and social progress of the Saudi people and have been that way since I was a girl. I have tremendous admiration for them.. because I remember the days when everyone had smallpox scars or eye disease, food was scarce and illiteracy was the rule. Further, they are friendly and hospitable people.. They're just different and some Americans can't handle that.
No, what I can't handle is the fact that they'll kill me or put me in prison if I ever set foot in their country. Yep, you're right- I can't handle that.
Hopefully they will release the 28 redacted pages during my lifetime... All my Saudi friends want to see them as well.
