Scientist: 97% Covid's Been Spreading for Six Weeks in Washington

Trevor Bedford is a scientist working with SeattleFluStudy, who just released their report of the genome of the virus found in one of the Washington patients.

"I'd assess the p-value for this coincidence at 2/59=0.03 and so is statistically significant. Additionally, these two cases are geographically proximal, both residing in Snohomish County.
This strongly suggests that there has been cryptic transmission in Washington State for the past 6 weeks."

An update, because I see people overly speculating on total outbreak size. Our best current expectation is a few hundred current infections. Expect more analyses tomorrow.

If there have been 50,000 cases in America over the past month, with a 1% mortality rate, and half of those cases have reached the end stage, that would mean an uptick of 250 pneumonia deaths and 1,500 critically ill patients. It would look like a slight uptick in flu deaths and hospitalizations. It would be lost in the statistical noise of the yearly flu.

Trump put travel restrictions on people travelling from China because of the virus but the news media did not report it. It only got coverage when Schumer came out and called Trump a racist for doing so.

An entire task force was assembled in January and the media did not report it. Now, however, they are screaming he isn't doing enough.
