I am in an apartment in downtown L.A. I have three guitars and a couple of other important personal possessions and would be seriously bummed out if they were stolen. Isn't there something like a heavy military grade footlocker I could put my stuff in, especially my guitars, making them safer than just leaving them in their cases? Thanks
First thing I thought of was a gun safe. But heavy duty stuff like that yells, "OVER HERE!!! THE GOOD STUFF IS IN HERE!!!!" to any thief.
If I were in your predicament, I'd put all my valuables into a U-Haul and move to Texas. They'll be safe there.
Actually, not so safe in Dallas, which I just moved from, but I am working on getting back to Texas asap!
Ooh, that's gorgeous! I'm not handy and I'm in an apartment at present, but I'll keep this idea in mind when I return to my house I'm Texas in 2024. Thanks very much!
Might want to see if you can hide an airtag in the lining of the case somewhere it won't be noticed so you can track them hopefully if the are swiped. If your other important possessions aren't especially vulnerable to their surroundings, you could try to find some old labeled boxes a thief might not be interested in and stick them in the utility closet with your hot water heater or hide somewhere in the laundry closet (assuming you have either) like say a space heater box. Surely they can't be a prime pawned item in LA.
I just put in an offer to buy 6.7 acres to build a barndominium outside of Canton TX. I may try my hand at a hidden door. I bet my dad would help me.
Canton ... that's the town with the giant flea market, right? I've been to it. Interesting people and wares.
Many years ago I lived in a rough neighborhood and I had 3 guns that I especially didn’t want stolen. I also had a sofa that was about 10 inches off the floor, like a bed underneath is up off the floor. So I created a means of stowing my guns under the sofa, which you could look clear under from across the room, but I stowed them up against the underside of it which, again, was constructed something like a bed with wooden slats up underneath. You couldn’t see them even if you got on your hands and knees. Eventually, of course, my house was burglarized. In fact, three times. And they always missed the guns.
I read somewhere about a guy bought a safe and filled it with weights and left it in the closet. He came home one day and he had been burgled, the safe was the only thing they took and they left drag marks out the house and down the sidewalk.
I have something like this bolted to my wall (from the inside). Its not 'bombproof', its heavier gauge sheetmetal. If they come with a large crowbar or an angle grinder, they'll get in. But it will take a lot of time and be very noisy- two things burglars don't like. I dunno if you could cram guiters in there... maybe? But I'm sure something similar exists that you could. This one should be $100-$150 (plus ~$10 for some good lag bolts). When you move out, its 4x small holes to patch up, no different than patching up picture hanger holes. Just make sure the bolts make it into the wall studs, and it'll be as secure as you can get, short of an actual safe.
I have an old desk with a recessed area in the back. I installed hooks and hang gun cases behind it. I also kept the DVR for the security cameras there.
